Roger Ebert attributes the origin of the term Gun-Kata to Nick Nunziata at CHUD.com, in case it wasn't mentioned earlier in the thread, and anyone's interested. I don't think that it has been mentioned on this thread yet though I am aware of the comment & Ebert was wrong. This brings up another old point of mine that I highly doubt Ebert, though he gave Equilibrium a possitive review, even watched the entire film since the term "Gun Kata" was used in the film. Meaning that it was done during production long before Nick would even have been aware of it. From the Kurt Wimmer Interview @ Sci/fi Dimensions... sfd: The combat sequences in Equilibrium are a distinctive form commonly referred to as "gun-kata". What's the origin of gun-kata? (And who coined that term?) KW: I coined the term in the context of the film - DuPont [the spokesman for the elusive dictator known as "Father"] first mentions it. I just made the thing up in my yard because I didn't want to waste my time making the film if I couldn't bring something new to it and something that excited me.

Since the topic back in the day was whether or not gun-kata was strongly influenced by "gun-fu" in the RPG "Cyberpunk" I think it was kind of funny to find this: www.rpgnow.com/product_info.php?products_id=2884The philosophy of the orden is different from the clerics we're used to but mentality seems strikingly similar. Of course there are also a lot of discussions on RPG boards of making GK rules for various game systems. Some rule setups are already available. One can be found on a GURPS fansite if I'm not misstaken.

Definetly a neat piece of work. The one I'd like to give mad credit to however is the person who made the avatar that hex_enduction_hour is using. Damn thing has had me snickering for the past 5 min now. brilliant.

Hey I know where that's from - it was on the website for a Korean media player app that also had 3D models following pre-programmed dance steps. I remember the old, old version I had years ago even had a Wesley Snipes/Blade skin and a Star Wars droid trooper. I think it was called DPlayer or something like that. I remember it particularly well because you could also take screencaps and make animated gifs (though I never tried). I had this crazy idea of re-texturing one of the models and putting my boss's face on it I was in charge of an irregular and highly unofficial company newsletter at the time...an animated gif would have been highly appreciated by certain readers... Gotta see if I still have a copy...that was about 3 hard disk crashes ago, but I have hundreds of backup cds... edit: Found the site - it's www.idance.co.kr. There seems to be an English version at en.mysprite.com/

I think what was shown in the movie is original yes. As for wielding two guns like a badass mofo no.

Hey Guys, Please im not trying to brag, and don't acuse me of it. I've practised Krav Maga, Jiu Jitsu and Wing Chun Kung Fu for over 5 years and i'd say if you'd take the anti knife techniques of Escrima (Kali or Arnis if you will) You'd get the circling and the hand controling movements. And take the directness of Wing Chun you would get the fantastic scene in the fight against (semi) father... And Gun Kata would be a lot more efficient if it'd make less circling motions with the guns (fastest point from A to B is a straight line) And i also noticed it requires you to be in the centre of the action most of the time... I'd be a lot smarter not getting surrounded, and thereby giving the opponent a maximum killing zone... But i guess thats why gun kata is a martial art and not a combat sport

You'll get on a lot better here if you don't insult people by assuming things about them that they wouldn't do in the first place, which means in my case. I haven't bothered reading past the first part of your post which pissed me off.

Not really.
And anyone that designs Gun Kata, Martial Art or otherwise best be ready to factor luck into anything they do. Because regardless of skill - that 1% remains in any statistically predictable element.
But the purpose of this thread is not to discuss if GK works or not, it's if it's original. There are other threads to discuss that on, where people seem to have had some success in formalising the art quite well.
