i thought the smoke started to detract from the scenes a little. i dont mind there not being tons of blood or anything, but come on! it makes the sweepers seem like they are actually made of old firewood or they are really dry scarecrows or something. they get shot and pounds of dust come flying out of them. i would have been happy with some more minimalistic use of the dust. Very true. In the last few scenes when all this dust starts flying everywhere, I had to chuckle, as it was kind of funny. less dust would have been a definate plus

All this "dust" talk is funny because it reminds me of Hellboy.

This shot makes Christian Bale look almost exactly like JC Denton in the first Deus Ex game. YES. The reason why I even know about EQ (and bought it) is because of Deus Ex (my favorite game of all time). Bale's name kept popping up as a potential JC for the DX movie and I was intrigued from then on and became an EQ and Bale diehard fan literally overnight. There's quite a bit of similarities between JC Denton and Preston. Both work for an organization they believed in until they get an "awakening" and end up aiding the rebellion and fight against the system. They are both special agents who can kick muchas ass, look great in coats and very deadly. Someone mentioned the palm stances the clerics (only index and middle finger extended) employ are simulating holding guns. I'm not an expert on this, but of the little kung fu I know, the palm stance is similar to to Hung Gar Kung fu's tiger and crane. This form "typifies sheer power, formed through the combined training of both internal and external energy sources." Pretty fitting for a cleric, eh? It's usually only forefinger extended but I gues the gun kata adds the middle. When doing various stances, the hand/palm requires it's own discipline and you can see Preston employ it offhand (if unequipped) while fighting.

Has anyone ever noticed the fear in the sweeper team leaders' voice as he tells Preston that they're there to arrest his wife. Hell Prozium or not, I'd be scared too, busting in like that to Cleric Preston's house...... He didn't get to be the best Cleric by being nice to sense offenders, if you know what I mean...... Also, I wondered if the two children were ever scared of their father? I mean, They must surely know that he's the most elite and then they haven't taken a dose for four years? What if he ever found out about them?
**I'm currently watching the film and so random thoughts are popping up, expect at least 1 more post from me soon ;D**

how do you pronounce Equilibrium? Do you pronounce it like Robbie and say (Eque librium) or do you say (Equal ibriam)?

Also, I wondered if the two children were ever scared of their father? I mean, They must surely know that he's the most elite and then they haven't taken a dose for four years? What if he ever found out about them? I don't think for one minute that Robbie and Lisa were scared of their father. Robbie knew that John hadn't clocked Viviana until the Enforcement team barged in. (and yes , I agree, even doped on Prozium, the guy was worried when Preston scrambled his colleague and stuck the rifle in his face!) Preston was in some sort of denial over family and friends' ceasing their interval so Robbie knew they were safe. And he tended to question Preston and rebuke Lisa to throw him off the scent. Also, Preston's innate character is that of an honest, decent man, which shines through the haze of Prozium. MHO, obviously.

I pronounce it eequilibrium...in fact, Robbie's pronunciation set my teeth on edge - sounded like he had hiccups!

You've set me off,now, NateP! ;D
I was thinking about how KW wove the script-within-script stuff, showing Preston following Patridge into feeling...
With this in mind, I realised that at the start of the film, Preston is in the role of 'senior' Cleric, taking charge. It's obvious later that in allowing him to do this, Partridge is really no more than a passive observer able to opt out of killing his 'fellow' offenders.
When Preston and Brandt go on the Mary raid, Preston is again in charge, with Brandt following a step behind and following orders.
However, as soon as Preston is off the dose, he 'does a Partridge' and allows Brandt to take the lead in the warehouse massacre- which he does with obvious relish - so that he, too, might opt out of killing...
Same with the dog scene...until he realises he can save the puppy. (Yay! ;D)
This is probably obvious stuff really, but I'd never actually deliberately thought it through.

after watching EQ again i noticed a few more things...
for filing, they use paper instead of computers. when dupont in talking to preston for the first time, he asked preston questions he already knew, because he had his and his wife's file out. to re-enforce the 'set up' scenario, dupont asks him why wasnt he the one to turn viviana in. and preston is a little dumbfounded in response [thus the perfect mole to get into the underground, thinks dupont]
during the church scene, partrigde reads the book from back to cover, instead of flipping through normally. was just a reverse shot or a sign?
again every person who normally wears gloves and isnt during the movie is feeling.
during the raid with the dogs in the back, one of the enforcers talking to preston salutes him and runs up the stairs.
also, the cleric guns in the movie are not 'modiffed berretas' but guns they use in the future. with this taken into account, we have no idea how many bullets they fire or what size the bullets are

I noticed that about Partridge myself......
I've also wondered about this: If they still have motorized transportation, then they have gasoline(who knows, but go with me here), Why can't the resistance get a car or truck working again, find some gasonline( there has to be some somewhere in the Nethers) and just get the hell out of that region? Preston Hmself said that resources were tight, that right there means that they can't monitor every little corner of the nethers.
Another thing, is Libria the last remaining city on the planet? If so, then there should still be gypsy bands of people somewhere on the earth, again, why not get out of range of the Clerics, and go live somewhere else?
Yes I know that these points were not discussed in the movie, but again, I'm curious! ;D

Another thing, is Libria the last remaining city on the planet? If so, then there should still be gypsy bands of people somewhere on the earth, again, why not get out of range of the Clerics, and go live somewhere else? I think in the script, it refers to the globe in DuPont's office where Liberia is a country (where USA used to be.) The rest of the world had other countries, but I forgot their names. Rember there was a World War, with Nuclear bombs. The rest of the planet may no longer be hospitable to humans. So the resistence can't just wonder off. They need to be close to the city, where there is water and food. good question though because now mine is that why didnt they just make the seneoffenders leave libria entirely? Maybe in the beginning they did, but the sense offenders got together and formed the resistence. There was an upheaval (briefly mentioned by Preston), so Father decided it would be easier to kill them all, since they are trying to kill him and take over Liberia.

When I saw that pic of Christian Bale, I didn't recognize him because he looks like Steven Seagal in there. Scary!
And a friend said that it was a total "Matrix" ripoff. But when I made him watch it, he now sees that it's entirely different! Thank god! But says that the storyline is similar to the book "Fahrenheit 451."

A couple observations that give me my kicks:
When Preston enters the secret room in the Nether, there is a poster above the stairs with a whole bunch of Snoopies plush toys on it. It strikes me as very sad.
Also, Partridge's photos are interesting as well. They are, in order: Three little boys in suits in front of a house; two people, a man and a woman in a park; four people (most likely family members) on a couch, the pillow behind them has a last name on it, it looks to be something like "The Nemis," then the photo of Partridge and Mary. Finally, there is a photo of a little boy in front of a Christmas tree. They are interesting in that they tell a sort of story about Partridge's character.
Right before the photos are show, Preston is sitting beside Partridge's body and says "I'm so very sorry," with true emotion, which shows he now knows what "sorry" means. Partridge pointed out that Preston didn't know.
Yes, this is one of my favorite scenes...

But says that the storyline is similar to the book "Fahrenheit 451." Yes, it is similar to it as it is to tons of other early "destopian" fiction. The unfortunate fact is that people today usually only read the ones they are assigned in school so they are not aware of most of the others. Fountainhead by Ayn Rand is one of the best in my hum. op. There is also a short story I read recently by Philip K. Dick, The Novelty Act, that also has some parallel themes especially to the ending of Equilibrium.

during the dog scene, the sweeper captain doesnt know who preston is right away. this re-enforces the idea of there being many clerics in the tetra-grammaton, how could this captain not even reconize the most senior one on the force?
the numbers on the bottom of the clips stand for what number the cleric was assigned, it isnt random

Actually, this isn't my observation, but my daughter's.
She wandered in last night whilst EQ was on Sky (again) . She's seen it a few times but always switches off before Mary's execution (she hates a 'sad' ending) This time she stayed to watch.
Anyway, after the 'not withour incident' scene she said,(edited to take out all the 'ums', 'ers' and 'likes'!) 'He reminds me of one of those little balls in a pinball machine...he's bumped from one post to another with no real control over his actions. He thinks he's scoring the points...like when he switches the guns...but it's just part of the game and it's only when he falls through the flippers at the end...when Father turns into DuPont...that he realises how much he's been played. Then he gets mad. And that's when they lose.'
I thought it was an interesting analogy...

One thing that gets me is in the Cadillacs, the Instrument Panel is covered up, but you would think the practicality of having one would outweigh any small amount of emotion they would cause, if any. Also there are no safety belts. For me, putting on a safety belt is a robotic reflex action, so I guess it reflects how other people aren't allowed to drive, so the Clerics don't have to worry about crashes.
When Brandt gets owned, the cut Preston made doesn't look deep enough to be fatal, at most took off a small part of his frontal lobe, but he seems to die instantly. I'm no doctor, though
When Brandt gets his face cut off, you see his left arm twitch. that was cool
Also, the architecture. The residential apartments are very drab and stark while governmental buildings are cool-looking. It reflects the hypocrisy of the establishment as well as fascist architechture.
When Preston reloads the guns in the hall of mirrors, as the camera zooms in, there's an almost seamless cut where the Cleric Gun turns into a normal Beretta and this gun that is actually reloaded. Look at the trigger guard.
When preston watches the video of Vivianna's execution, he sees himself turning his head after her (he would not have done this if he were totally cold, plus the video could have been used as proof for DuPont that this could be his mole in the underground) Then when video Preston looks back at the camera it almost looks as if he's begging real Preston to not make the same mistake twice.

I have read all pages of this thread (an excellent thread, I have to say!) and I think that this hasn't been mentioned yet. In the scene where Mary is burned, why is a cleric behind her? Is he preston? I heard something about an optional ending in wich Mary didn't die... Can somebody explain me this? : Sorry about the low quality of the image, but it was a photo taken with my camera. I can't take screenshots with the computer... So, there you have. There is somebody behind her. And, about the chocolate cereals, we also have them here in spain and i recognized them the first time I saw the film. Funny name... chocapics. ;D ;D ;D

You're quite correct...in the original screenplay, Preston gets there before Mary is executed, but for various Machiavellian, DuPont inspired reasons, she has to enter the furnace (she tells him she has to do this) therefore we see Preston distraught...and that's why the frames which show him arriving and the subsequent ones where he's watching her behind the doors are a bit choppy. www.freewebs.com/equilibrium-movie/zequilibriumscript88.BMP

Yeah, you see theres lots of stuff like that thats a little complicated to understand...like how can u love and have kids if u can't feel love? Anyways i watched a show saying Kurt 'made it his own way'...like he didn't want zombies and stuff...i guess maybe those are emotions you can't completely kill....even with a drug?

I was watching equilibrium for the 11th time again the other day, and I noticed something. when preston was in the freedom reading room, he threw the man(librarian?) to the bookshelf, so the man fell on the ground with all those books and preston stepped into another room where jurgen was waiting for him. There was a flash of Preston stepping into the other room which shows he stepping over the man on the ground WITH A GUN IN HIS RIGHT HAND. then, next scene, HE WAS PULLING HIS GUN OUT OF HIS JACKET POCKET.... In fact I've read this thread and tried to find most of the observations YOU mentioned and I enjoyed it a lot. *lol*

An observation I recently had was when John is not feeling, he has a shirt on in bed and when he is feeling, he doesn't have a shirt on. I wonder if this is so he can feel the texture of the mattress? Or maybe it was just to show off that hot body to the audience.
