I love EQ, but after still not being fully sold on ANY of the 3 Matrix movies, for one reason or another, I can only wonder what Kurt's skilled writing and directing might have accomplished if he'd invented the Matrix, and done the films, same casting and all. Any thoughts?

For Heaven's sake, people: Why do you have to keep comparing The Matrix and EQ on "which one did it better" ?? ;D They are totally different movies! The Matrix: - Epic story devided into three long episodes - ACTION-films - Cyberpunk setting - Humans fighting big, bad, powerful machines - Big budget, looong production time - Wachowski style. EQ: - Single story told within two hours of time - Distopic drama. Remember: There are only a few minutes of action going on at all. They are fantastic minutes, but they don't make up the movie! - Classy "seemingly perfect future society"-setting - Human society in upheaval - Low budget, hasty production (but great outcome) - Wimmer style. (I think Angus McFadyen called Wimmer's personality "Zen" like - Could you imagine a Zen-Matrix-movie??) Alright, I just had to get this written down. Now go ahead with your experiment of mixing those two works up. I'm curious about the outcomes!

HAD KURT WIMMER CREATED THE MATRIX FILMS,
THEN HE WOULD BE A MEGA- STAR DIRECTOR. THE
STUDIO EXECS WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM BIGGER BUDGET
FOR EQ AND CHRISTIAN BALE WOULD HAVE BEEN A
BOX-OFFICE STAR RIGHT NOW.

Anyhow, I agree with the whole comparison thing. It really is annoying, and is made worse by the UK DVD cover, which looks very similar to both Matrix DVD covers. Curse those publishers!

I agree with you all in being weary of comparisons between the Matrices and EQ, because they are NOT alike at all. In fact, when I read the cover..."Forget the Matrix, this movie will blow you away.", I was reluctant to watch EQ, because I thought it was another Matrix rip-off. Wow, was I wrong! A co-worker showed me the puppy scene and I was SOLD! I went out and bought it that day, watched and LOVED it.
I think some of us wonder, including myself, what The Matrix films would have been like under Kurt's direction. I definitely wish Bale had played Neo rather than Reeves. My reason for linking the films is that I was so enthralled with The Matrix (all other films paled in comparison for me), but after seeing EQ, I became slightly less thrilled with the Matrix films. Not that I don't like them, but EQ is just so much BETTER! So, for me, wondering about KW directing The Matrix films comes not from my thinking that they are similar in any way, but from wishful thinking. ;D

See, what Trinity said is what I meant. I dont mean any big comparison, its just that Matrix got all the glory, while EQ got pushed aside. EQ has more and better of what Matrix films tried to give: Action, story, emotional content(no pun intended). The one thing Matrix has that EQ doesn't is of course, Agent Smith, my fav character out of all 3 films. The first Matrix film never clicked with me, mainly because everyone thought it revolutionized sci-fi/action movies. Sorry, I was watching Fist of Legend and John Woo movies before that stuff made it into Matrix. Reloaded didn't overly impress me as it did overly confuse me, and Reloaded brought no earth-shattering insights as we thought it would. Wheras my friends all were instantly sold on Gun-Kata, and love the concept. Plus, the "dramatic" scenes in EQ far more worked for me than someone rambling on about choice, cause and effect. No, I'm not dumb, but I don't like it when themes are laid out in a very high-minded way that most people cant follow. So, thats about it.

EQ has more and better of what Matrix films tried to give: Action, story, emotional content(no pun intended). And I, personally, just cannot go with that. You see, Matrix may have gotten "all the glory" in public. But to me it seems that many of you guys here (not all of them) kind of counterreact to that Matrix hype, by (over-)glorifying EQ and try to swim agains the stream. That's why I just wanted to point out that they are different movies with different focuses and strengths. I am sad that EQ didn't get the attention it should have, but I cannot bring myself to say "EQ has earned that attention way more then Matrix has!" Action, story, emotional content - The Matrix did deliver them all to me, only in DIFFERENT ways than EQ. That's just my personal opinion - and I've got a reputation among friends for having "a way too eclectic taste" , so forgive me for saying that I guess Matrix just isn't THAT shallow. So I suppose that's just what it boils down to: A matter of taste. I'll try to leave it at that *struggles*.

Lets see...there would have been less wire-fu or even none...less use of slow motion. More emotional/tense moments in Reloaded & Revolutions and there probably would have been nil anime influence. And the worse scenario ... there would have been no EQ because he would have been too busy to make it.
I for one am glad that both exist in their own and separate spheres.

Jen makes really good points. We would not have wanted Kurt working on The Matrix at the cost of him not having created EQ. My main comment would be that if KW had directed The Matrix films, perhaps he would have chosen Christian Bale for Neo's role. I thoroughly enjoy The Matrix films, however, at times (particularly in Reloaded), I have trouble getting past Keanu Reeve's horrid acting. Seeing Keanu acting opposite such stellar actors as Hugo Weaving, Laurence Fishburne, Gloria Foster and Anthony Zerbe was at times embarrassingly awful for me. I feel like KW would have chosen an actor who could play Neo well, and not simply have chosen an actor with no acting talent but who would draw in big bucks. Okay, I won't get off on a rant here about Reeves. Interesting thread...musings... ;D

Nice one Keanu! ;D
Just finished reading this thread, and I must say I agree with the sentiments already raised in this thread, I'm glad that the Wachowskis made Matrix and not Wimmer. I love their style of story telling, as I love the things they do: anime, kung fu movies, comics, etc. I also love Wimmers style of storytelling.
And I've always thought it a crime that EQ didn't get the exposure it should have....Dimension made a big, big mistake there. It would have made a lot more moeny for them had they released it world wide and to a greater number of cinemas.

Okay, Keanu...there was one line in The Matrix which I felt you delivered with appropriate emotion....In the car, after the bug is removed, when you say, "Jesus Christ, that thing's real!" Hmmm...who could you be? Jen said you are a Member.
