I actually think the spring-loaded spikes are feasible provided you sacrifice some ammo capacity. If you make space by losing two rounds from the mag, the mechanism could form part of the baseplate and thus not interfere with the operation of the mag. But that makes those long scenes without reloading even less likely. The M93R style extended baseplate mags would be ideal, but these aren't used. We have to put it down to artistic licence.

i agree w/ the idea of making a melee style weapon out of the magazine of the gun, but im not sure the spikes are the right idea. at least not retractable ones.
-the price of manufacturing magazines would increase dramatically if they had to force all kinds of extra moving parts inside them. probably to be economic, there would just be base plate attachments for your situations. spikes, bobber-weights (lobby scene), etc. the spikes wouldnt retract, but you could still use them.

Has anyone considered that clerics may carry multiple firearms of varying types for various situations. Maybe when Preston uses the spiked magazines in the pistol whip fight with the sweepers these are not his primary weapons, which are up his sleeves, but additional weapons for close combat, kept in his side pockets. Just an idea. In conceal and carry you sometimes have a shorter mag in your holstered weapon with longer additional magazines concealed elsewhere. This is not just to maximise the concealability of your weapon, but also to maximise your available ammunition. Glock do a range of magazines with varying capacities for just this reason, I believe.
