I am so totally into this gem ... having only found this a few weeks back, have watched it 3 times on DVD now.
Then, managed to find this wonderful site and forum and reading all the posts all everything about this movie.
Also checked out some of the fan stuff and videos, wow .... just didnt realise this movie had such a dedicated following.
Was wondering ... now that EQ has turned from no-hoper to a cult classic, would you guys prefer to EQ to have come out big and have a big Matrix like phenomenon, or be a Citizen Kane of science fiction, where no one really talks bout this film until decades later and then, it is widely seen by film scholars as a genuine masterpiece.
Personally, i prefer the 2nd approach ... look what happened to matrix series after the enormous success of the 1st film, just went downhill. I still like the first one a lot, but feel that the whole matrix phenomenon has been somewhat dampened by the inferior sequels.
wat you guys think?

I just actually noticed this, we usually look for Introductions in the Intro thread. Welcome to the forums...
We've discussed the viability of sequels before but not if we'd like to see EQ become mainstream...personally I wouldn't like to see it become a mainstream phenomenon, part of the film's charm for me is that it's a cult classic with a recognisable excellent cast and a lower budget than some Hollywood Blockbusters - it managed to beat them hands down.

Welcome to the madness, ian. It's an interesting question ... I myself make a convert for this movie every couple of months or so. I'm not sure I'd like to see it become mainstream ... for one, there's the question of whether its owners would even allow that, which seems doubtful. For another, I was attracted to it just because it was NOT mainstream. Sure, "The Matrix" (the first one) was a good flick, but as far as I'm concerned they coulda just left it there instead of making the landfills groan with even more trash.
Hands up here, anyone who would really LIKE to see a "Cleric Preston Happy Meal Toy"... *peers around ... passes over Frivvy waving with both arms* Nobody ... ya see? So ian, your feeling seems to fit in here.

Well, as much as I'd like to have a little Preston with 'Kata Action' and Sense Offense perfume....I'm certain that the movie holds it's own well as being just as it is without being mainstream. Mainstream movies tend to loose flavor after a while with the masses while cult movies tend to live on forever.
hmmmmm......I do really want a little Preston with 'Kata Action' guess I'll have to make one outta a Gi-Joe.......hehehhehehehehe

I so totally agree, having EQ toys in fast food and commercialising this wonderful Libria world in the mass consciousness is definitely not what i hope would see this. so glad that you guys agree that we should keep EQ as part of our little community, among those who really appreciate and see how good this film is. who knows, maybe in 10 and or 20 years from now, it will turn up in some best of lists, dare i hope in sight and sound perhaps?

I don't know. I love mainstream films like Matrix & Gladiator but there is just something about these hidden gems that when they blow the big boys out of the water that I just love. The same thing happened with Pitch Black. It was sad to see that when it went mainstream (Riddick) it was not as strong as when it was small.
I'd hate to see something like that happen to EQ.

Oh I still love The Matrix and Gladiator and the like - but the masses don't always hold onto good movies - they kinda just roll with what the flavor of the week is. So people like us still appreciate movies like The Matrix etc but the general public is more like 'oh yeah, I remember that movie...Keanu what's his name right' - I just think it's better for EQ to hold strong with the fans as opposed to mainstream because it's where it belongs - with the people that really appreciate the movie. I agree....I do so love the hidden gems ;D

Hey I love Ghost Rider and a lot of people hated it, each to their own I always say...and I am right up there with not wanting toys and fast food...
Now Cleric Uniforms and guns *G* that's a whole different kettle of haddock.

However ... as with "Ultraviolet ..." I could see a graphic novel series ... perhaps dealing with prequel to the movie ... kinda like I'm writing right now ... er ... sorta ... nevermind, I'll get me coat ...
And we do have a few items--speaking of coats--like the Abbyshot Cleric coats ... which run WAY small, I'm given to understand, so make sure you give them your exact measurement, or else order at least one size up!! And there's fan-created wallpapers and things ... which I think happen to be for the most part, WAY cooler than anything commercially done. Yes ... I like things as they are.

I wonder...would the Happy Meal come with a side of Prozium?
I first saw EQ in our city centre cinema. It was on a really short time and wasn't well attended (although everyone there when I went was gobsmacked by it)
Some films are never meant for the big hype and that's OK.

lol @ the side of prozium ;D
I like the fan fic and art way better than most professionaly done things anyway - fans put passion into it and sometimes in the graphics industry there are people that don't have passion for the job they are working on and just make something that doesn't reflect the story or the characters (like The Prestige *gag* they should have hired a CB fan to make the posters and promotional materials).

I think EQ and its success is fine the way it has turned out... one thing that I think disqualified it from being mainstream was all that thought Wimmer put into it. the movie, the characters, the whole topic has got so many layers, so much to think about and wonder that the average cinema dude would probably just not get it. all those "hey, I saw the biggest flaw - Brandt is feeling" topics are proof enough ;D
I've "converted" a dozen people or so by now, and absolutely all of them loved it. I think that's all the proof you need that even though EQ doesn't have a huge hype surrounding it, it's brilliant.
*then scampers off to McDonald's to get myself a Happy Meal*
