I just recently watched the show Firefly again, and the movie Serenity. Like many newer fans of Malcolm Reynolds and his crew of the Firefly-Class transport Serenity, I didn't know that the show existed until the movie came out. Like many overly manly and macho dudes out there, I didn't watch FOX for much of anything other than the news. Too much crap TV. About the only thing I would watch was Family Guy and American Dad. The rest of the time the TV would pretty much belong to the wife anyway. Too many girlie shows on. Too much drama. No where near enough action. Besides, before I got married, I didn't even have basic cable in the barracks. Couldn't afford it on a private's pay and still make payments on my truck. Priorities.
I was deployed to Iraq for the first time when Serenity came out in theater. I had seen some of the previews and the movie looked pretty interesting. So, I had to patiently wait until I returned from combat and watched the movie in the comfort of my barracks room, and loved it. I'm a sci-fi junkie, anyway. So, a couple of days later, I'm in the local Best Buy, and what do I see? A boxed set of the TV show Firefly. I had no idea that the show even existed. I snatched it up and immediately devoured the entire thing in about three days. Then I watched the whole thing over again. Then I watched it with my room mate, and then one of my best friends. The show was unanimously loved by all who watched it with me.
I loved all of the characters, and all of their stories, and all of the ship, and all of it! I just recently found out that Joss Whedon is talking about making a sequel. Granted, these are only rumors. But the thought is still very exciting. I also discovered that someone made an Indi-film called Browncoats : Redemption. The reviews weren't very good, but I'm still really curious about it. Thank God for Amazon! It should be in the mail shortly. Because I'm a fan, I'm willing to go to some length to check out things like this. I'm sure some of you fellow Clerics would agree with me on that.
If you have the time, check it out. If you're anything like me, you'll love it.
