They had a test preview in Portland in October. I didn't see see it, but I talked to someone who did. He said it wasn't finished (effects towards the end really not finished) but he thought it was very good, definitely an "R" rating. It ran about 3 hours long and Doctor Manhattan (the big, blue guy) was just as he appeared in the comic-- Full Monty. ;D
It will be interesting to see what the final cut looks like.

Ah, well, I meant the movie. But maybe not even that. I define "camp" as something which provides a sophisticated appeal through outrageous and clever use of unsophisticated means, such as stock characters, done-to-death plotlines, unbelievable coincidences, etc. Such as .... well, such as my own creation, "Nonstop Murder & Lust."
Karl Marx is credited with saying something to the effect that history repeats itself as tragedy, and repeats itself again as farce. The same thing, I think, often happens to themes in popular entertainment; to take a random example, in a century we went from "The First Men In The Moon" to "Forbidden Planet" to "Space Vixens From Mars."
Of course, I'm talking out of my hat since I never heard of the graphic novel and my familiarity with the movie is based on nothing but a viewing of the trailer.

Yeah, we differ in vocabulary there since that's not my definition of camp.

I'm a fan of the graphic novel, so I'm not sure about the movie. The biggest potential problem I have is the choice of Jack Snyder to direct it. I'm one of the few people out there who apparently disliked Dawn of the Dead and 300. However, one thing to consider is that I'm not a big fan of what they were based on in the first place, while Watchmen actually is. So I might like this movie.
Snyder might make good on this project, but I still question how adapting an unintelligent Frank Miller comic qualified him to adapt an intelligent Alan Moore comic. Who knows, this movie might be good, and if there's anything I like, it's being pleasantly surprised by a movie.
One thing I like about it is the art direction. The colors are bright while the movie still looks gritty; it seems to do justice to Dave Gibbons' artwork and then some. Dr. Manhattan looks great. Truthfully, I've never understood why Jack Snyder was considered a good visual director when his only apparent trademarks were cheesy faux-matrix slow motion and using chroma key like Sin City. However, the look of Watchmen seems to give some credibility to this claim.
I might just go see it. Hopefully it will be a faithful adaptation of the general story; I don't mind if a movie leaves side stories out.

Despite what we've seen in the trailers, Snyder says he shot as much practical footage as possible instead of turning to CG immediately.

I can't wait to see the film so far from what the trailers show it looks like it's faithful to the graphic novel. Im glad they gave the costumes an upgrade.

Warners and Fox settled their suit over Watchmen so it will be released on schedule.

Saw it Saturday. Nicely done! Well worth seeing on the big screen. I deliberately didn't re-read the comics before seeing the movie so I wouldn't be bogged down by preconceptions. It flowed well, didn't feel like 2 1/2 hours at all. The fight scenes are graphic, well choreographed but not prettied up--- bones crunch and blood splatters. The cast was excellent, everyone is their character. Much as I liked The Dark Knight, The Watchmen was much more tightly put together; probably helped by the fact that they were adapting a single work, unlike Dark Knight where they were trying to cram three stories into one film. ...and for those of you familiar with the comic, Dr. Manhattan is shown full frontal in all his blue (CGI) glory.

I saw this opening weekend and I have to say I was disappointed. I didn't think it was as good as it could have or should have been. I read the graphic novel and was looking forward to the movie. I really didn't like the choice of actress for Silk either......
