I suppose its arguable that that's not Bale, since you can't see his face. But I think it's a bit obvious.

It IS Preston...all films have goofs but this isn't just a plain mistake. KW didn't bother editing him out of the scene either because he thought no-one would really notice (given that he'd re-edited it to have Preston still running down the hallway whilst Mary went into the incinerator ) or as is more probable, it would have been too expensive to reshoot. As Resident Conspiracy Theorist I have a few ideas about why he changed this (which I'm sure I've posted on another thread, which I can't find) It all links with these (and the rest on the page): ...and Mary's OS line about going to the fire 'for a reason' But, can you imagine Preston letting her burn? I can't...given that he'd slaughtered the sweepers over a puppy. She HAD to die to give him that reason...the anger and determination to bring down Father, but I think the whole dynamic of the film would have shifted if he had stood there and let her die, rather than being too late to save her. KW had already decided against the 'Hollywood ending' of Mary not really dying but being a pawn (or maybe not) in DuPont's Machiavellian scheme...

Thanks for the observations, Libby ... you brought out something I knew but had never really thought of 'in so many words.'
It would have been kinda creepy--even given the creepiness Clerics are supposed to project--that Preston would start an affair with the woman his partner--whom he'd killed for reading a poem--had been having an affair with previously. Especially if he did it after he'd gone off his dose. That is in fact, creepiness of a such a degree that it inspires me with a plot idea for "Nonstop Murder & Lust!"

Jurgen (probably) Partridge (definitely) DuPont (possibly) Preston (missed out due to her previous 'hot' date!)

Brandt no wonder he's all smiles, and no wonder her execution took so long.

Nah...I reckon he had a thing for the Vice-Council Notice how he spat the line about Preston having 'relations with a female'.

Personally, I think Brandt and Seamus were a pair. Brandt's real motivation for 'getting' Preston was revenge for his murdered darling.

I just watched the scene you are talking about. Yup, it's Preston. Why they didn't re shoot the whole thing, who knows. But, if they did show the kiss on the cheek, it would have been too early of a tip off. Then the sequence where Brandt takes him on the street and not in the incinerator hall doesn't really work. However, once Brandt arrests Preston, you can clearly see that Brandt is very obviously feeling himself. Matter of fact, you see him feeling earlier when Brandt and Preston are sparring in the Monastery.
