Looks interesting. I don't think the cartoon was very good, and judging by the trailer, the Wachowskis realized it and amped up the intentional cheesiness.
I love the colorful, intentionally cheesy live-action anime look, but I think they overdid that on the race scenes. The daytime racing scenes look like something from a Hot Wheels Direct to Video cartoon. It actually makes the helicopter scene from Ultraviolet look photorealistic. I know it's supposed to look cartoony, but I think they overdid it.
I love Roger Allam (Lewis Prothero) and his cheesy rhyming line, and the Wachowskis are good at action. The fight effects look much better than the races.
All in all, it looks like it could be a masterpiece of intentional badness.

I was never a fan of the series and when I saw the trailer I was even more turned off from it. What will be interesting to see is the live action AKIRA movie. Leo decaprio is producing.

Well, the series isn't to everyone's taste--but then again, nothing is, not even EQ! I think the series was pretty fairly done, all things considered. I'm sure you know this, Snake--but for the benefit of the audience--many younger people know it only from its 1990s appearance on Cartoon Network; it was actually made in 1967, before several of its lead actors were born. After "Astro Boy," (which I think it still stands up as well as, if not better) it was the first anime-style series to succeed in the U.S. market--due no doubt to its homage to things and pastimes American. As I remember from watching it when it first appeared in '67--it was my favourite cartoon that season--the writing used rather more subtle and complex plotting than was usual in animated shows at the time.

I couldn't believe it when I saw that they were making Speed Racer into a movie. I never liked the cartoon (just not my kind of anime) but much to my chagrin it looks pretty flippin' awesome! 'Course I love cars....that point aside, I think I'd like to see it at least once.

I'll go see it. Art it won't be, except perhaps in a technical sense. Entertainment of a certain order it will be, complete with hammy acting, cheesy lines, and pickled situations ... best viewed with a side of chips and a soda.
But then, you're talking to a guy who will hold against all comers that "Amazon Women On The Moon" was one of the greatest movies ever.

I'll watch all the tearjerkers with you faithfully. MIRA: 'Look ... how could she ...?' *sniff* 'He--is he? OMG NO! NO! Aaaaaah!' *SNIFFFF ... choke* 'Look--LOOK!! Oh it's--OMG!!'
EG AEDH: 'Bummer. Though you know, if she fell that far in real life, her limbs would be all twisted. More popcorn?'

But then, you're talking to a guy who will hold against all comers that "Amazon Women On The Moon" was one of the greatest movies ever. Amazon Women on the Moon was excellent parody, and features one of my all-time favorite performances by Henry Silva. But Kentucky Fried Movie was pure brilliance with "Fistful of Yen" and "The Man Who Lives for Danger" skit.

Ohyeah, Speed Racer: I'm thinking it will be pure awesome. It's the Brothers showing how to make a real family film sans saccharine. And points to casting Christina Ricci.

I just saw this movie and I love it. I might even like it more than the Matrix.
Some might say it was a bit saccharine (it was a tad corny at times), but I thought the movie had tons of heart. Very family themed plot about a son growing up and doing his family proud. There were some parts that reminded me of the relationship I have with my family so I found the movie very relatable.
The movie is also laugh-out-loud funny. Spritle and Chim-chim are great. And it's mostly very family friendly humor and well-done slapstick. Some moments pushed the PG rating though.
The races were good, but could have been more clearly shot. The cinematography was far more spastic than I expect from the Wachowskis. Fair warning, Mr. A.

I can't believe my reaction to Speed Racer. I haven't felt this way about a studio released blockbuster in... I dunno maybe a decade, maybe ever, at least when seeing in a theatre. I mean I've never finished watching a movie, walked to the box office and bought another ticket to see it again.
Speed Racer will probably end up being my second favorite film of the summer. (Cause Wall-E is going to rule everything else).
Seriously do yourself a favor and see this film on IMAX. Its pure joy. Its been a full 24 hours since I saw the film (twice) and I still can't stop smiling.

I liked it..
In the Prestige Michael Cain was talking about the Transported Man trick and he said something to the effect of "it looked so simple that the audience didn't get it." I think the same thing applies to this movie, it was so incredibly visual that some of the achievements are going right over the audiences head.. Story could have been a bit better but otherwise it was stunning, from the visuals to the sound to the action sequences, it was eye popping..

For fans of the cartoon it's the best thing out this summer. Honestly I think this is one of the few biggest trash out this summer. That and Semi-Pro. Don't want to be mean to the film but it's like I said it's only for fans of the show.

Don't want to be mean to the film but it's like I said it's only for fans of the show. This isn't the Indy 4 thread. Seriously I barely watched the show and everyone else I know who has seen it has the loved the hell out of it, with little knowledge of the original series. Its just a genuine joyful experience. I'm a fan of being transported, of my heart popping out of my chest when the sensory overload gets so much that it appears that the celluloid is going to melt before my very eyes, and this film gave that to me. Have you seen the film? This film is tanking cause everyone is writing it off in advanced. Open your eyes and listen to Ratatouille's Anton Ego: Embrace the new. If you have seen the film and thinks its trash, the only answer is you're on Prozium. This film is love.

It's not going to be Hamlet, it's Speed Racer. It's meant to be a visual ride, and it delivered.
Although I did enjoy John Goodman's performance, especially the "More like non-ja" sequence.
