Man how did I miss your thread Mr. A?
I've been looking forward to this film since I saw the trailer in June. I saw it the week that Die Hard hit the screens and I was lamenting the lack of decent R rated, made for adults action films. Can't wait for this!!
It's lining up to be this year's Crank.

official website has a pretty awesome red-band trailer - click view age restricted content: www.shootemupmovie.com/Though it shows a lot. Not a lot of plot, but a heck of a lot of the film's setpieces....

I just saw it. The gunfights in the movie are incredible, and Paul Giamatti is cool in it.
The humor in the story is not very good. Most of it is very strained and sophomoric. The movie also commits the cardinal sin of playing bad heavy metal the second a fight breaks out. The story is terrible. There's some idiot conspiracy twist that makes the movie seem like it was financed by Handgun Control, Inc, and yet it has some of the most fetishistic portrayals of firearms I've seen (especially in the ending credits). I've always felt Hollywood's feelings on guns is the exact same as Claude Frollo's feelings on gypsies, and this movie is a perfect example of it. I also wanted to smack Clive Owen's character, especially when he publicly spanks a random mother for trying to punish a naughty child. I really was rooting for Paul Giamatti to blow his head off. I'm just very conservative and this movie pissed me off.
Comparing this with another post-Tarantino edgy action movie, Boondock Saints I found:
-As action movies: Shoot Em Up is great with awesome fight scenes, while Boondock Saints doesn't break any ground. -As comedies: Boondock saints is foulmouthed and tasteless but witty and very funny. Shoot Em Up is just tasteless. -As intelligent commentary: Both movies fail miserably, but Shoot Em Up makes BS look like an intelligent take on vigilantism.

I wanted to love this...but just couldn't get into it. I'm slowly starting to hate it. I'll check it out again. Maybe I was just too hyped, but as it stands its an average actioner that tries way too hard to be funny.
Crank is the epitome of what this film wanted to be.
BTW...I love Crank.

I enjoyed this film a lot for what it was...a live action adult-themed cartoon. Giamatti was priceless.

I also enjoyed this film for what it was but it certain could not touch Crank.
The body count is quite high. It'll really have to remain "pending" until the DVD.
Also there is one certain "EQ Award" in it. Did anyone spot it??

I liked it better than Crank actually. Although, neither one is particularly re-watchable. Sort of one-viewing wonders.

Crank is the epitome of what this film wanted to be. I finally saw Crank. Overall, it's a much better movie with a better premise. It's humor is natural and innovative, and the movie is incalculably funnier than Shootem Up. Still, I thought the action in Shoot em Up was a lot better.

I sat around and thought about why I liked Shoot Em Up better than Crank. In Crank, you had only one character everyone else was pretty much a cardboard bit support character. Not that the main character was especially well-rounded...it's just sort of relative! So Statham was pretty much left holding up the whole film.
With Shoot Em Up you have multiple characters (all played by fairly solid actors) in Owen, Belucci, and Giamatti. Giamatti playing a hitman was pretty much casting gold.
Both were excellent live-action cartoons. I enjoyed both. But for the above reason, I got more out of Shoot Em Up.

One little thing I noticed between the two movies:
As I pointed out in my review, Shoot'em Up milks the phallic/gun jokes for far more than they're worth.
On the other hand, I have to commend Crank for the only funny erection sight gag I've seen in a movie. I usually hate stupid erection sight gags in comedies.
Now if Crank had the same story and humor, but it replaced that punk with Paul Giamatti's character and had Shoot'em'ups fight scenes, it would have been the perfect action comedy.
