I just want to comment more about this one... It is one of my most anticipated films this year. 1. Ridley Scott is my favorite living director (the only one with three films in my top 25...3. Gladiator, 6. Alien, 19. Blade Runner) 2. He's the only director I know who really seems to be able to reign in a big budget & not sacrifice the characters for the epic ambiance. He is one of the few who really can balance both. That being said I still have some reservations though I try not to ever second guess a filmmaker. My main difficulty will be Orlando Bloom. I'm not saying that he can't pull it off but I'll definitely have to overcome some biases to give him a pass. The subject matter is also right on my level. I love history & find the Crusades as well as the knights Templar to be a fascinating topic. It makes me wonder how deeply Scott is willing to delve into that subject. The trailer looks awesome though and has much that reminds me of Gladiator. This can either be good or bad. Find more info here... I really wish that this movie was having a midnight showing in my area but alas it does not so I'll have to wait until Saturday to catch it. Though I care little for critics in general I do faithfully watch Ebert & Roeper (mostly to catch undiscovered films like EQ). It was interesting though to see them echo my feeling that Ridley Scott really is the current master of these types of epics. He's one of the few that seem to be able to juggle a big budget and not drop the ball when it comes to the characters.

Been bored of these films lately, but Ridley is a great director. And the subject matter is interesting though how they'll make the Crusaders sympathetic should be interesting...
I've heard some negative buzz unfortunately...Scott hasn't ever really delievered something that wasn't watchable so...

I just came from watching this...
well let me think - Orlando was okay here, but he wasn't given much character development.
The action was pretty good - it got you right into the blood and gore, so much so that you could imagine the stink of sweat and the blood spraying in your face and someone's guts under your feet....err...ahem. sorry, got a little carried away there...
It was okay...just not quite great.

Well, it looks as though there is a midnight showing after all so I'm here hanging out at my local free wi-fi hang out until I feel like getting in line.

I don't think that I can really objectively write any type of review for this film since I'm such a Ridley Scott fangirrl and being such I absolutely loved Kingdom of Heaven. No one currently does these types of films like he does. No one should use the choppy, edited, action scenes except him. He is a master at it. The film is not politically correct and as such will offend any number of people. The Crusades are a difficult subject to cover because they have still not ended. Too many people even today, on all sides, are still tied to these ancient ideas & thoughts about the holy land. Ridley juggles a fine line of politics, religion, and the individual caught in the grandiose epic of history. A history that is relevant and is currently playing out in our own world. I had thought this film would be too much like Gladiator but it was not at all. It completely stands on its own. Only some of the battle sequences are reminiscent of it. Even the music is very different. I appreciate the fact that a filmmaker would not replay himself but endeavor to create a new entity, a new world for me to appreciate. I also had doubts about Bloom but his character and youth were, in my hum. op., captured perfectly besides it did not hurt that he had an outstanding ensemble cast to support him. Interesting that two of those were from Timeline, a film I feel unjustly received internet evisceration. For those who have seen it...what did you think of Edward Norton??

THAT was Edward Norton?? Damn...he was REALLY good!!!
I was also glad to see Jeremy Irons...for some reason, when I see him (and a few other actors) in a film, it kind of feels like suddenly bumping into an old friend.

Just saw this, the Director's Cut, with Mira. She'd seen the theatrical version before, whereas I hadn't. I thought it was a terrific flick. She kept sitting there saying, 'OMG ... that explains that ... this wasn't in the theatrical cut ... neither was that.' Apparently almost 45 minutes of footage was restored.
It was well-done on every level, I thought. I wasn't offended at all, and I'd say anyone who felt as if their religion was being attacked should say hello to--if not the twenty-first century--the twentieth at least. The Risorgimento ended a very long time ago.

What I love of about Ridley (and Tony) Scott films is that they have to be seen on the big screen! The scale of their films are so large, particularly their action and battle films such as Kingdom of Heaven, Black Hawk Down, Enemy of the State, Gladiator, etc. Love it!
