Kurt Wimmer is going to be at a small film conference here at the University of Texas in Austin! I'm getting more details in terms of schedule but the conference itself starts at noon on Friday and is being held next to the building where I work...which is one of the buildings myself and my co-workers keep all the tech stuff going. www.utfilm.org/conference.htmI'm having an absolute fan meltdown. This is not only the same town, but practically my backyard. Good thing I have a week to work through it so I'll appear as a seemingly normal human being. I guess this is a sign I should clean my office cubicle.

Awesome stuff Aikido! I'll be shaking hands with Darth Maul & Jango Fett this weekend at a convention but I'd probably swap that any day for a chance to have a chinwag with Wimmer.

By Darth Maul if you mean Ray Park, he's a really nice guy and approachable. I just didn't have much to say (or time) in the signature line besides "I like your work." A friend of mine caught another appearance of his where he did some martial art demos and heard they were pretty awesome. So I hope you get to see that. Would love to ask the actor who played Jango of what he thought of the foolishness regarding the confusion of his character as being a racial stereotype of Arabic or Hispanic people by certain organizations...especially since he's Maori!

Hey...that's awesome... Coke for Aikido Al... YAY! Yes. It's very informal. I inquired the guy coordinating the event and he emailed back: "...we meet in the lobby of the CMA (third floor facing a courtyard) and have a few rooms that we divide up into, then reconvene in the lobby. We don't have a set schedule yet, as we're still working on getting more guests." It will cost $10, but lunch seems to be provided. I'm not expecting anything fancy for lunch however. If anyone needs more info on where this is and directions/advice/prayer regarding parking, they can PM me. Since I may be the de facto representative of the Boards (Does Wimmer know about JenGe and the website?) I plan to take as many pics as possible. Anything else that would be good for the site should the opportunity present itself? The only questions offhand I can think of would be the one nagging me about the "Preston calling in the Tetragrammaton" scene which Wimmer says is an obvious homage to another film...of which we haven't found out about yet. On the film technical side I plan to ask what lessons he learned from EQ that he used in Ultraviolet. If I talk to him face to face, I will probably ask if Bale paid up on the Batman bet.

I tried to send the newsletter out but I seem to be having some type of glitch right now with proboards. Anyway, I personally e-mailed several of the members who are in Texas (NateP, Manimal, & Vanessa) and am checking to see if there's anyone else I missed...

One member that I personally e-mailed stated that she might try to make it as well. I'm looking forward to hearing all about it & adding the info to the site (once my laptop is back in my hot little hands.)
Have fun!! Wish I could join you guys and have a party!!
Maybe next time...

I think I should have stayed in bed today... MY BAD. I was in such a haste to type the news in the first post that I mixed up the day/date. The event happens on SATURDAY. I got the following schedule from the coordinator: Noon - Get started 12:30 First Workshops (Editor Bud Smith in one room, Filmmaker Ti West in another) 1:30 Lunch 2:30 Second Workshops (Producer Ron Bozman in one room, Writer/Director Kurt Wimmer in another) 3:30 Third Workshops (Budd, Kurt, Ron in seperate rooms) 4:30 Filmmaker Panel (Budd, Kurt, Ron, Ti all together, With Harry Knoweles Moderating) Since it mentions workshops, those could be overly technical. So those who aren't into film may find those a bit much. I'm seeing if people can show up late to just attend the 4:30 pm panel which in theory should be more "fan friendly."

I know the link to the UV fooftage has been posted on the other board (which I'm still not sure I want to take a peek at) but have you guys taken a look at a small segment of the Q&A... www.cs.utexas.edu/users/taele/movie1.aviIt captures the same type of humor that Wimmer had at the Atlanta Q&A as well.

I'm working on the article (I wrote copious notes!) and nabbed some photos. I'm going to have a friend edit it and I'll send it on to JenGe if you'd like to make a page for it. If not I'll post it here. Yes, he shown not only a trailer of UV but also an action scene from it! It was still raw as it needed some additional FX work, but it looked better IMHO than the first trailer of "The Hulk" which had the same problem. The action is how I described it to a friend afterwards: "Think the strategy of gunkata mixed in with caffienated wushu!" He uses all the words, not just the F word. But it's funny. I hadn't seen the video clips in the thread, but I did see people filming his talks. The link to one of them appears to be broken. Has anyone saved it? I'll see if I can beg a copy of them. Still stoked from the experience. I got to shake his hand and thank him for making Equilibrium and that Ultraviolet looked pretty damn awesome. Unfortunately didn't get to cover much else in terms of pimping JenGe's website. I wasn't smart...I should have printed out a copy of the main page to give him for reference. But he's very approachable so we may be able to mail something to him via his publicist.

No, don't worry about doing that. It appears that all the links are being taken down at the request of Wimmer himself. I certainly would not want to have him contact me in this manner. Not the way I want to get his attention!!! Looking forward to seeing your article.

Hello Everyone. I ran this Conference and I'm really glad that it looks like those of you who went had a great time. It was a pretty incredible experience the whole way through. Kurt was a great guy to meet in person and everybody working with me was just really impressed with what a great guy he was. We all quickly began to miss him once he flew back. The clips that got out were not made by us, we did have people taping, but only for internal private uses, basically, and perhaps a highly edited trailer afterwards to promote next year's event (that we'd run by our guests before releasing). What happened was not supposed to happen and has upset a few of us at our organization. Otherwise, a great time was had by all. There were some amazing people in attendence and the event went very well, and lunch was great. I look forward to your article, Aikido - I'd like to get a copy of your pictures as well, if that's ok. You've been emailing me before, so, you can contact me there.

Hi NickRob, it's great to have you drop by the place. I hear that the event was fantastic and would have loved to have been there myself if I could. I can back you up on that one. After meeting both Wimmer & Nick Nunziata (of CHUD) two years ago I was ready to leave my family & join a commune. ;D Way too much charisma in the same room between the two of them. Anyway, if you guys get anything posted about the event I'd love to add a link to my site as well. No more videos though.

Hope y'all enjoy it as much as I enjoyed working on it! Probably not as much as I enjoyed (desperately needed) working on it. I have been going through major withdrawals without my laptop and I had to stage a minor coup d'etat here to commandeer the family computer for a few hours just to get that finished yesterday. It was nirvana to be able to code & work on the site again. I desperately miss it. THANK YOU...for giving me a reason to shove my kids off their system. ;D Anyway...some comments... I love Wimmer's humor. You really did capture the same lighthearted wickedness that I witnessed in Atlanta. The DVD commentary really does not capture as much because he is in a more professional setting. “How many value your soul?” Nine-tenths of the audience raised their hands. “How many don’t?” Four people raised their hand. He said, smiling “Four people are going to make it.”I find this one particularly interesting. My hubby always laments how much money these film guys make. Having worked a bit on student films myself back in the day I try to explain to him that he really would not want to do what these guys do to earn it. My hubby hates people and to deal with them like this would absolutely do him in. Milla, he said, is “a killer Ukraine.” He recalled that on the set he asked her to punch him expecting to get it in the stomach and she gave him a black eye.Bahahahah!! Now that's funny!!! “I think I got him the movie.” ...Warner Brothers requested for a copy of Equilibrium to review.See, I stated all along that if it wasn't for EQ Bale probably would not have landed the role. I certainly was unaware before Reigh of Fire that he even had an "action" bone in his body. Glad to see that Wimmer saw something that I did not because EQ was filmed even before Reign of Fire. Wimmer indicated an interest in doing more NC-17 type films, instead of going to TV, which is the opposite direction.I find this one interesting as well since from my first viewing of Equilibrium I understood that EC-10 was a swipe at the NC-17 rating and the inconsistencies with ratings of the past (Ben Hur would never, ever get a "G" today.) When Preston stands and shoots the screen with an "I'm coming," I always took that as a metaphor for Wimmer himself as standing there at that NC-17 rating and saying the same thing..."I'm coming"...BANG!!
