I caught the last 10 minutes of that on cable. The guy was bulky but he moved well.
Anyone see "Drive" starring Mark Dacascos?

Yeah, Drive is FANTASTIC, especialy the Directors Cut version, which is longer and has a better soundtrack. The action keeps the WireFu to a minimum as well, it's more about what Dacascos can physicaly do, and his skills come across all the more impressive for it. Mark Dacascos is an action actor who has been sorely underused by Hollywood. Check out Brotherhood of the Wolf or Drive to see this guy in full "ass-kick" mode. Cradle to the Grave (in which he's the bad guy) doesn't really do him justice. And it's an awful movie as well.

The martial arts displayed is awesome. Lots of one-on-one. My favorite scene shows him taking out the palace guards when he goes to fight the Fist of the Southern Cross (Costas Mandylor).

I've seen him do a number of different arts across the years...

How about mixed fights? Those are always spectacular. I say.. Sword versus double sai. Single nunchaku versus double tonfa. Long boo staff versus double short boo staff. Dual kama versus dual hooked swords. 3-sectioned staff versus long staff. Metal chain versus 3-sectioned staff. Dual machette versus dual tonfas. Ladies and gentlemen..place your bets!

Does anyone know what sword style bale uses in the film? It was a form of Katana, a longer katana then usual, but none the less I believe it was a Katana blade/handle but like the berratas, Modified Also, there might be a few different versions, or actual different swords in the film the one shown here is defiantly a Japanese design, somewhat curved in the katana shape, but its a little longer then a katana, so I believe it to be a hybrid of a long sword and a katana, or even a shorter, Samurai long sword, but not a full samurai as it could barley be wielded with two hands let alone one.

Oh yeah, cleric ryan, hooked swords versus kamas, that would be an AWESOME fight!
As for the swords used in the movies:
The clash between Bale and Diggs is a 'holywoodyfied' version of Kendo. They use specially made 'bokuto' practice swords (bokuto meaning wooden sword).
Their fight looks impressive, but in reality it is a carefully structured and choreographed kata that must have been repeated time over time to get it right.
The swordfight in Father's office is a 'holywoodyfied' version of Iaido. Iaido is the art of drawing the sword. It usually is practiced alone, just by katas. It comprises of 5 steps:
1. Concentration before the battle 2. Drawing of the sword 3. Striking the first blow to the enemy, disabling or killing him. 4. Cleansing the sword of blood. 5. Sheathing the weapon.
And all that in one fluent motion!
The sword used in the movie seems to me like an 'in-between' model between a regular katana, and a wakizashi. I estimate the total length of the sword used (including the handle) is about 1 meter. (3ft 4.)

I was mesmerized by movies Kill Bill and The Last Samurai. I love their weapons and fighting styles. And also in EQUILIBRIUM.

Tonfas, no one uses them enough, that plus staff fighting. I've been working on a graphic novel idea and the "hero" uses tonfas and boo staffs mainly. Wood on the outside around a metal frame so you could parry swords/bullets with it!
Wimmer better not steal my idea! ;D

Im surprised nobody has mentioned kali sticks yet. My personal favorite blunt martial arts weapons to use. It takes "hella" strong forearms to use them well, but there are so many uses for them besides smashing the face, torso, arms, and legs of the poor sap or saps you are defending yourself from.
Perhaps kali sticks versus a halberd, a katana, a pistol, a morningstar, ball-and-chain, and tonfa. That would be interesting and potentially awesome.
