In the commentary Wimmer mentioned that he wanted to something different for the showdown between Preston and Dupont. In the script it appears he wanted to have them shoot at each other in such a syncronized fashion that their bullets would hit each other and fall to the floor. Unfortunately his idea has already been used. Twice.
First of all in The Shadow. There's a scene where the Shadow and the bad guy shoot at each other and their bullet hit exactly and fall the floor. However the sequence is poorly shot and comes off as corny, so Wimmer is still safe.
However he isn't with Versus, probably one of the best action/horror films in recent years. When the hero is fighting the villain the pull out pistol and run along side each other shooting like mad, every bullet hits each other and falls to the ground.
I don't think its that big a deal, but though I'd mention it for people who may be interested in checking it out and trying to picture what it would be like in Equilibrium.
BTW about Versus, if you guys though Equilibrium was amazing for its budget check this film out. 400k budget, two cameras, one setting and some of the best, stylish and brutal action I've ever seen. Any fan of horror, martial arts, sci-fi and esspecially if you like Equilibrium type action check out Versus.

I think his plan was much more elaborate than that... In the commentary he mentions that he couldn't make the scene he wanted because of budget and time constraints.. This implies that the scene was much more complex than a simple double kill.

I'm just mentioning some films which have attempted the idea that Wimmer was going for. I'm assuming he wanted to have the gun fight appear more like a sword fight where instead of swords striking each other, bullets were. The sequence in Versus is more of unleashing a hail of bullets and each one hitting the mark of another bullet. Wimmer no doubt planned to do something a bit grander, however I'm mentioning these mostly for fans who might be interested. And I'm going to stress again on how good Versus is. It is clearly the king of action cinema as it stands, by the way did I mention that there is no CG at all in the film, yet it produces a spoof of the Neo dodging bullets sequence. How? The actor is actually bending backwards in real time. Even the knives used in the fight sequences are real. Sorry if I'm being overbearing on the topic of Versus, I just finished watching it for a fourth time. I get a little excited. Well, time to watch it again. ;D

So am I the only one glad that it wasn't included inthe final film and that the 'pushing hands' sequence was a much better idea? (wouldn't mind seeing Versus though)

Versus is not really a sequel. It was supposed to be Down to Hell 2 which was based on a $300 video that the director of Versus had done with his buddies. However, when they begun production on Versus the realized that they had the skills and resources to make a real film, so they abandoned the idea of a sequel and started fresh, but with the same idea.
The film came out in 2000 and has done very well at film festivals. There is an large cast of characters, all of whom remain nameless throughout the film. The basic premise is that there are 666 portals to hell, and the 444th is in Japan. The portal lies in a forest known as The Forest Of Ressurection. Whoever dies on the sacred ground returns as a zombie to guard the portal. The problem is the Yakuza has been using the forest as a burial ground for the last few years. On the day of the movie, the boss has put a team together to pick up two escaped convicts and a girl and wait for further instruction. The gang members, convicts and the girl soon discover they are not alone as the dead begins to rise and the secrets of one of the convicts pasts catches up with him.
The film makes a lot homages to other films (Evil Dead, Terminator 2, Highlander, Blade, The Matrix) much like Equilibrium did with its references to 1984 and Brave New World. The fights are fantastic and creative, with rarely any sense of tedium. Each fight is always something new. There are even some samurai action during some of the flash back sequences.
Its a must buy for action/horror fans. The cover is indeed the one with the cloaked figure holding a kattana over his shoulder and gun in his other hand. If you can get the Special Edition its also worth it as the commentary tracks are hilarious.

Oh btw. Try to avoid the "R" rated version. It isn't bad, but the regular unrated version is the best. Also try to find one that hopefully has a Japanese track, I'm not a huge fan of the English dub. It isn't as bad as dubbing usually is, but some of the accents and voices are done very well in the Japanese version.

I don't think that this has been mentioned yet and I know its old news to the forum regulars but since we are daily getting new people here I thought I'd mention it again. Wimmer does state on the DVD (I think that's where it is) that he and Foster are planning to incorporate some of their scrapped ideas from EQ into Ultraviolet.

I just saw versus and I still don't think the bullet to bullet hits are what Wimmer had in mind. They seemed pretty simple and Wimmer's commentary makes it sound like they wanted something much more complex.
Versus was good though and really funny at times too. Plus the dvd cover is badass.

yeah. I bet Wimmer has something more complex in mind, but I was just reporting these films if fans wanted a taste of what we can perhaps expect in Ultraviolet. The bullet hitting bullet scene in Versus also occured in under 10 seconds and was only a fraction of the climax, Wimmer most definitely was planning something much bigger.
Glad you liked the movie though. It is quite funny at times. I love the crazy gangster (the guy who uses switch blades) he stole almost every scene he was in (though he went a little bit to off the wall at the end).

I really hate using the word "rip-off" but my daughter & I both noticed it as well. We practically launched out of our seats when we saw that.

I have to say first of all THANK YOU to : TheKaiser for bringing Versus to my attention, this movie is the best action/horor movie made in recent years indeed, I bought the DVD this weekend, and I love that film. Thank you for helping me find this kind of movie I may have never heard about it other wise.
The bullets hitting bullets was SICK. 400K budget, that is remarkable. PLUS, this movie is like the Japanese Pulp Fiction , I just freken loved it

Sweet! Tell the people, get Versus noticed. Yes, there was some definite inspiration from Tarantino. Where'd you pick up your version by the way. Is it the special edition one. If so have you listened to the commentary tracks, the cast is so hilarious! Probably one of the best commentaries out there.

That is next on my watch list for sure, I want to watch it a few more times anyway, Il enjoy the comentary as well I am looking forward to it ;D. The scene Im refering to about pulp fiction is when they first all meet up by the cars, before the one dude turns Zombie. I picked mine up at this store called StarStruck, its like a movie dvd/vhs place with only movies for sale. It was the last copy and they said they ordered only 5, but when they sell out they order 5 more, and so I think it may be starting to get noticed, il do mine to get people to know, speacil edition, un rated of course Also, LOVED the DnB fight scenes, Japanese Drum and Bass just stars ripping, I was howling for a few scenes

Dude I go to a place called Starstruck as well. I got my copy of the film from an HK Film site: www.hkflix.comI get most of my Asian stuff from either there or Chinatown. The Pulp Fiction shot you're talking about actually reminded me of Resevoir Dogs (another Tarantino film). As for my favorite scenes I loved the first zombie fight. That one crazy gangstar (whose character is apparently based off Brad Pitt's character from Twelve Monkeys) was hilarious and stole every scene, especially that one. The first hyper-zombie fight was great too. Hero vs. the red-haired guy. Esspecially what happens right after it. I love the final sword fight, after the "hero" throws the sword to the "villain". Did you know that the whole sequence was improvised! Its insane! As for the epilogue, that was just icing on the cake. Unexpected and wonderful. You gotta love those two idiot policemen and their massive gun. Man, i gotta watch it again. Its so good. Anyone passer-bys on this thread take heed. Versus will rock your world. See it now, any way you can.

I watched that film about 60 times i think, used to fall asleep to it. "Buddy I AM GOING TO SHOT YOU IN THE FACE.." lol Yes that crazy guy is the best, he is so funny somehow also scary, he got straight wigged out at the end but I loved him. The cops were pure comedy, and I think my fav part was when they made fun of the matrix "Those bullets are two slow for me HAHAHAHA" then he tries to do the bullet dodge, but gets blown up by the second shot, lol, I was laughing so hard when that happend. I cant belive that final fight was improvised. Thats amazing. And the sword that the hero uses, that thing is pure greatness

Versus Fun Fact 1: The villain's suitcase was originally supposed to contain soy milk. The director had a bizzare idea for a soy milk drinking villain. And the thing that ended up in his suitcase (I won't spoil it for others) was built by his dentist who also worked on the film as a "zombie expert" and a "pryotechnics advisor".
Versus Fun Fact 2: According to the director the only two people he knows of he really understand zombies are his dentist and Hideo Kojima (the creator of Metal Gear Solid and his best friend). In fact Ryuhei Kitamura (the director of Versus) is also directing the Gamecube version of Metal Gear Solid!!
Versus Fun Fact 3: Versus was Ryuhei Kitamura's first feature film, but was based on a short he did for $600 with his friends on Hi8 cameras.

Aha! Yes another convert! Spread the word.
Glad you enjoyed the film. I've yet to meet someone who genuinely was disappointed with it. I've seen people super hyped for it, so hyped that you'll expect disappointment and they arn't. I've seen people who convince themselves before hand to hate it and they end up loving it. Its got to be one of the best action/horror films of the last decade, perhaps even the last 20 years. (That would intrude on Evil Dead territory though and thats blasphemy!) And yes it is a B-Movie! Probably the best b-movie out there though.
