Hi, as some of you know we are developing a new combat sport called GUN SAU which is based on the DuPont vs Preston figth in EQ. We have been using squirt guns for training which work great but obviusly you can't use them indoors. We have also tried toy disc guns which work fine as long as you keep them in a normal position but the discs jam as soon as you turn the gun sideways or upside down.
I have played paintball a couple of times and have read about airsoft on the Net. Can anyone with more experience tyell me if it would work to use paintball or airsoft pistols for Gun Sau? Obviously we would need masks etc. Would the guns and the bottle things that hold the paintballs be strong enough to take lots of contact in Gun Sau or would they break? Anything you can tell me would be great. I want to make Gun Sau the best i can but this gear is $$$ so I need to get lots of info quickly. If it sounds like it would work I will try to get some more proffesional guns for Xmas ;D

If you use paintball or airsoft at that close of range, I'd suggest you wear a neck guard of some sort (you can get good ones at sporting goods stores, near the hockey equipment I'd guess). I don't have too much experience with the guns, though... except a traumatizing point blank shot in the ass from a paintball gun once.
Believe me, it left a mark.

Yeah, I've come out of paintball (shoud that be painball?) games pretty bruised up myself. I don't know if I want to see how hard a paintgun hits at close range ... but is it possible to use less air pressure or somehting? Either way we would use masks, neck shields etc.

I knew of a guy who lost an eye due to paintball at close range so my recommendation would be to go with something else & use all the gear.

Hi JenGe, yes, my dad keeps saying "safety first and last" and he knows what hes talking about. If we do end up using paintball or airsoft we will be armored like knights. We have pretty much given up on the disc guns now, it was wortha try but they jam so much there's no point. Theer are probably better ones out there so we will look around. But we have already looked on the net and most guns that shoot foam bullets or discs or whatever are either single-shot dart guns or are disc guns like the ones we got in the first place The squirt guns work fine but its hard to get taken seriosuly when you are using squirt guns, also they only work outdoors. But I guess paintguns would be the same.

Go for airsoft, I've emptied an entire magazines worth of BBs onto the goggles at litetally point black range. The BBs etiher deform slightly or split in two. Good pistols for GUN SAU would be:
-KJW (Plastic or Full Metal, slide and frame) M9 -KJW (Plastic or Full Metal, slide and frame) Para Ordanace -KSC/KWA Glock 17/19/26
All are gas guns that can run propane/green gas, all you need for that is a $30 propane adaptor. Are much more stream lined than bulky paint ballguns with hoppers and gas tanks hanging off them.
Maybe the new Tokyo Marui 18c Electric non-blowback pistol.

Hey Megalomaniac, thanks for that! That is exactkly the sort of info I was looking for. One thing I didn't think of before is that airsoft guns are going to be pretty solid, which might mean we would need apdded gloves or something ... and that would make it harder to hold the gun Anyway I will do a bunch of research on this and get back to you. BTW what do you think of the GUN SAU idea?

OK I had a look online for the gear you were talking about, it looks EXCELLENT but the guns plus the armor is just too expensive for me right now. If you guys try GUN SAU with airsoft gear could you please let me know how it works out? If you get some pix I will put them up on the website. Thanks

Maybe i'll try it tommorow my freind has two full metal KJW M9s I'll try and see if he wants to try. Also what do you mean by "armour" you don't wear "armour" you only need a pistol, bbs, gas, and goggles, maybe a balaclava to prevent bruises but its not nessciary. It shouldn't cost more than $200 per set and you can start playing airsoft with the stuffin addition to GUN SAU

No offense man, I just figured that if you were firing BBs at close range you'd need some kind of mask etc. Anyway we are still expeirmenting, today we bought some LazerTag gear which is probably more high tech than we need but it looks fun (haven;t tried it out yet). It has a heads-up display in the goggles, you can program it for different kinds of games etc. Maybe one day we'll have it all worked out so you can do Gun Sau with airsoft, squirt guns, lazertag, paintball, whatever.
Please let me know how your Gun Sau session goes tomorrow! BTW its best to start off real slow and do it more like a dance becuase if you get competitive too soon it kind of turns into a wrestling match.

I think I'm going to end up winning I have long spindly but stronger arms than my opponent's arms.

That's what I mean, if you start off going all out it will just come down to who is faster or who has stronger arms. It's more about positioning your body, balance, using your body weight properly and being able to feel what the other guy is doing and counter it. Anyway have a great time and please let me know how it turned out. I think you're the first guy apart from us to actually do this stuff!

Actaully when we finally test it, it will come down too (in the beginning) who has stronger and faster arms, body positioning is just abit adavnced and he won't figure out that till a few matches/spars have gone by.

I have been posting to a lot of airsoft forums - some of those guys are kind of negative but others made some good points about safety. If we use airsoft guns for Gun Sau then we would kind of have to trek out into the woods every time we wanted to train so we wouldnt break windows, risk hitting bystanders etc. The lasertag and water guns are looking better all the time ...

Airsoft BBs can't break windows, airsoft BBs are small plastic sphere the mold line on them is where the tend to snap when the strike glass. Also hitting bystandered's isn't a problem just don't do it near people who don't want to be hit. Typically someone's backyard should be fine.

Thanks - maybe you could join up on the Gun Sau forum? Most airsoft guys seem to have no interest at all in my idea so we don't have much choice but to go with what we know (ie lazertag and pump-action water guns).

A word of warning about using airsoft guns for gun-sau: a friend of mine who plays every week told me about this guy he knew who got a pellet stuck under the skin of his face and had to have it surgically removed. Maybe his mask wasn't on right, or something like that. My friend's been playing every week for years and he says it's safe, as long as you take the right precautions, like not shooting people in the face. Maybe off topic, but: One of the "joys" of living in the Philippines is the easy availability of cheap airsoft knockoffs. There's a flea market near where I live, where one of my brothers saw a battery powered Beretta 92F (almost the same as the base gun used for the Cleric pistol), complete with working slide. I hear there are also Desert Eagles with the same feature. Tomorrow I'm off to meet someone who sells airsoft guns (both genuine and knockoffs) and I'm told he has some P90 guns (the ones used by the sweepers guarding Preston's apartment) selling for under US$20 each. My friend already has one; he says it looks great but shoots like crap, so he's only using it for display I can't help but think how easy it would be to get props for an EQ fan film..... ;D

here is all you need to play airsoft.
-gun
-paintball mask(you can use goggles but use a mask to be safe)
-clothes
thats really it. depending on your pain tolerances, you can add or subtract clothing as you want. the pellets are small so they pack much less momentum than a paintball. also, since they are plastic, the force gets deflected off you some instead of the paintball breaking and all the energy going into your body. granted, they sting but if you wear much clothing or 'armor' you wont feel much of anything.
-the best option that i can think of for similarity to cleric pistols are KWA Glock 18C pistols. they have metal slides and have full auto capabilities as well as similar ammo capacity (25) for what you are looking for. they are pretty accurate so just try to aim towards the center mass of your target (which you should do anyway) and you'll be just fine.

Hi TrustKill, thanks a lot for the feedback on AirSoft. From talking to people on AS forums it sounds like they would be too powerful to use at the point-blank Gun Sau range but we are starting to look into using them for other types of training.

::shrugs:: ive been shot w/ an MAC11 replica firing at well over 300 fps from about 10-15 feet away. it stings like hell but nothing that wont go away in a couple of days. consider it additional motivation to not get shot. hehe.
