Greetings all- I am brand new!!!
Love the site, I thought I was the only person on Earth who not only heard and saw the movie, but loved it as well! EQ RULZ!(never heard of the movie until Ebert/Roeper video picks of the week)
Anyway, I saw the movie about 1 week after me and my wife brought home an 8 week old bernese mountain puppy. I was viewing the movie and almost fell off the couch! "Holy crap, that's my dog!" I couldn't believe it! I stopped the movie and paused it to confirm - yes that is most definately a pure-bread bernese mountain dog. First off, these dogs are not very common - at least in the USA, second I have never seen one outside of a book or web photo. And third, how did he get in the movie; and why did they choose that particular breed?
Anyone have any ideas about the puppy in the movie?
Further, I think that of the 3 times you see the puppy -
1-when they want to kill it and Preston keeps it for "testing". 2-when he takes out like 20 people to protect it n the nethers. 3-at the end when said puppy is licking a girl's hand after the collapse of libria.
-that it is a different puppy every time.
Any insight or info on the cute little guy is greatly appreciated. Why this particular breed? Who does it belong to? Were there multiple stand-in puppies?
The reason I ask is because the Bernese Mountain Dog community(berner L) HAS seen this movie and talks about it on their bboard.

Welcome to the boards! I suppose they picked that dog because it was the cutest one available to them at the time...

I know that Wimmer mentions something about the Bernese Mountain Puppy on the DVD but I can't remember much of it right now. I do believe though that more than one puppy was used because he did talk about how fast they grew.
I could be wrong so don't quote me on that. I'll go pull out my DVD and see what it says...maybe someone will beat me to posting it here though...

However, I heard this as well on the Audio Track 1 (Director/Producer). He had 1 puppy, but it grew so quickly, I think that's why you only see the hand lick at the end (the head is noticeably larger). But I don't remember about there being more than one used... Makes me think I should spend a few days this weekend making a transcript of the commentary tracks. So Jen, if I write it, will you post it?

In fact, I'd planned on doing it myself sometime in the future as soon as the site slowed down a bit...but this just isn't happening anytime soon. (that's actually a good thing

I'm not sure on the shooting schedule of EQ (when they did the puppy scenes etc), but this seems to be a pretty common problem. I know when they did the movie version of 101 Dalmatians, they had to replace the puppies every TWO WEEKS 'cause they just grew too fast *shrugs* Maybe that's what happened here

Here's what the director says about it...they use one dog!
From the DVD, Audio Track 03 (on the disk) Kurt Wimmer (KW) Lucas Foster, Producer (LF)
LF: “Hey remember this puppy? “
KW: “Oh yes.”
LF: “We had problems, note to future film-makers, puppies grow! And they grow at a rapid rate. We picked the puppy but by the time we shot him he was starting to get a bit little (pop) puffy…” (laugh)
KW: “Burmese Mountain Puppy…”
LF: “…Hefty.” (laugh)
KW: “It wasn’t just that we picked him and he started to grow…he was growing from day to day.“
LF: “Yeah.”
KW: “He would show up the next day and he was the size of a pony.”
LW: “Yeah.”
KW: “He was a remarkably stupid dog, I have to say, and we burned a lot of film trying to get him to do the most basic things, like that, and I ended up stealing a lot of shots. But, the fact of the matter is, is that, although some people think it’s manipulative, the audience’s heart really goes out to this dog. This is the scene where I think the audience, for the most part…”
LF: “…this is where we get them…”
KW: “That’s right, for the most part, they’ve been sitting there and the juries out about what they think about this film, but after this scene, where he kills 13 people for 1 dumb dog… The audience is not going anywhere at that point.”

"remarkably stupid" Awww... poor little guy. These dogs are not generally considered to be "stupid" - actually they are considered to be pretty smart on the general scale of dogs. But, lets be real, it is a puppy and judging from the size, anywhere from 8-10 weeks old in this movie. I don't envision an 8 wk old following direction very well. Of course he isn't going to be cooperative, he is a puppy afterall - he just wants to play, and on a movie set I am sure there is plenty to play with! But I absolutely agree with them about how at this point in the movie - you are hooked. He kicked 13 dudes asses over that puppy! Somebody thought he was special! Also, they picked him for the film, and as dogs go - his cuteness factor is huge! Even Preston couldn't help but be taken by this little guy. This is also the first point in the film we can actually see the gun-kata in action (not in the dark). After he kicks ass he looks around calmly and is almost ready to say, "I will now take my puppy... and leave." If you want to see pictures of some (puppies and full grown) follow this link... www.berner.org/
