I know this has probably been discussed, but look again. Brandt hands Preston his gun at the execution scene, to his right hand, yet if you notice, Preston is holding his own gun in his left, aimed at the floor. And the gun who he's switching from Safe, to Semi, to Auto, then back to lock, is the one in his right hand, Brandts. But he then hands Brandt the gun in his LEFT, aka, Preston's gun. Simple as that, as far as I can tell.

There's also the scene at the beginning of the movie. You'll notice Preston hands Brandt a gun from the hood of the car, and Brandt looks a little startled. You can't see his hands, but there's a chance that this was the switch as well.
The conflict is the fact that if the switch was during the execution scene, then it happens *after* he kills the soldiers in the warrens (puppy) scene, but they clearly say that the weapon used to kill them was Brandt's.
An endless source of fascinating debate. ;D

Simple as that, as far as I can tell. See, I tend to agree with you but then the draft script does mention the switch taking place at the car. Someone what to make a flow chart?? BTW, now I have a new thread to add to the FAQs page...

I also think that the siwth doesn't really matter....cause in the end when Father tells him Brandt handled his job perfectly in setting Preston up....so doesn't the gun swap become irrelevant if Brandt was doing what he was suppose to do.....I don't know if that makes sense....it just gives me a headache and I still love the film!! ;D

I agree, the whole point to me was to use Preston to his fullest to achieve their ends. It was a game DuPont and Brandt relished playing; to see how they could manipulate John. If DuPont and Brandt were off the dose in a world where everyone else was considerably boring, then they'd have to find some form of amusement.

It either occurs at the raid scene before the animals shooting when Preston hands Brandt a gun while standing at the hood of the car, or it happenned when Brandt hands Preston a gun to execute the offenders but then Preston hands him a gun back and he hands him the gun in his left hand, but Brandt's gun was in Preston's right hand.....but I still think it is all irrelevant since it was all part of DuPont's plan to set Preston up.

This is what I thought. Since they are playing Preston the whole time, they would perhaps refer to the gun switch even if the timing wasn't right, to further confuse, and convince Preston that Brandt is being taken away for Summary Combustion.
