Sorry if I'm being dense, or if I've missed something really obvious, but what's the deal with Viviana Preston? Who is she? When I saw the movie for the first time I just assumed that that was John's wife's name, but then in the credits a different actress is listed as playing Preston's Wife. Hence my confusion. Can anybody help?

I think it is his daughter.

Now, that was my second thought, but wouldn't she have been mentioned in the scene where DuPont asks him about his family?

No, Vivianna Preston is his wife. The cops come and take her away in the opening few sequences.. Then near the end he watches the file footage of his wife's sentencing and notices he has to save Mary. Also, his daughter's name is Lisa. They mention her name in the scene when the boy catches him in the bathroom near the end.

So why the two actresses? According to imdb:
Maria Pia Calzone .... Preston's Wife Alexa Summer .... Viviana Preston
It seems a bit odd that they'd get two actresses to play the same woman...

I don't know.. possibly an error? IMDb has so many movies it's always possible. I wonder who plays who and what the extra lady plays..

I'm pretty sure that there were two names in the credits, too. I remember mentioning it to my friend. Hmm, this is very confusing...

Hi Sus and welcome. I've been wondering about this myself. The "production notes" from the film has the same list as IMDb... Preston's Wife - Maria Pia Calzone Lisa Preston (daughter) - Emily Siewert Viviana Preston - Alexa Summer Viviana is the name Preston uses when he requests files from the computer. Now I had also assumed that Viviana was his wife. Maybe 2 different actresses were used for the role hence the varied credits or there are two characters. My guess would be the first but then I'm really not sure. Production Notes (acrobatic reader file) www.movieweb.com/movie/equilibrium/notes.pdf

But when Preston is talking to DuPont for the first time and yelling at him, he mentions he has had TWO wives.. and both were taken away.. though that implies that the Video of Vivianna Preston is from his first wife which is improbable. Crikey!

Well since you have a copy ....why don't you look at the two scenes in question? Do they look like two different actresses??
BTW, check your e-mail.

Well children, the actresses look totally different, and to complicate things even more, I think that John is dreaming about when his wife was taken away in the scene where the cops break in. Because he had finished talking with DuPont and then he killed Partridge, then went home, then went to sleep then it switched to the scene and then he woke up. But the twist is, he says that his wife was taken away 4 years ago to DuPont.

Here is an idea I had besides the one that its two actresses playing the same roll. Maybe Viviana is some other relation to John Preston...like a sister.

Since we're probably never going to put this to rest, I for one am going to go on assuming that Viviana is Preston's wife until it can be proved otherwise...

Hey Sus, I remembered something today. When they come to arrest Preston's wife doesn't one of the guards say something like, "Viviana Prestion, you are under arrest." I think they are the same character but for what ever reason played by two actresses.

Well it's true. I checked my version, and the guards jump in and say: "Vivianna Preston! Don't move!" Then in the end when he watches the video he obviously says Vivianna Preston file footage. Confusing..

Oh! You're right! I never noticed that before, but now that I listen for it I hear it. Ah well, that settles it. Good stuff.

In Russia I saw many reviews on EQ.
In one of them EQ was great film, in another - ugly parody on Matrix...

There is an explination to this! John's wife's name is indeed Viviana Preston. And she was played by two actresses! One did the arrest scene, the other while on trial. Why? Well, the first scene they made was the trial scene. Then, later, when they were going to make the actual arrest scene, that actress from the trial scene had disappeared! I'm not joking, I read about this yesterday! So, the other woman we see during the arrest is a stand-in, because the original actress had litterary vanished! Not even her own agent knew where she had gotten to! Strange things happen, even in this film! So, there is no dream, no two wifes, nothing of such kind. It has nothing to do with the plot, it's a drama behind the camera. There are two actresses because the first apparently got lost! And she missed her chance to kiss Chris Bale too! Talk about loss!

What was she thinking? A chance to kiss Chris only comes once in a lifetime. Maybe she got so nervous about the kissing scene she fled in panic.
