Hello everyone! I`ve seen Equilibrium exactly one week ago and my first thought was something like "WOW! GREAT! AGAIN! AGAIN! AGAIN! Funny thing is, when I went out into the WWW to get to know EVERYTHING about Christian Bale and Equilibrium I found out that the largest part of the movie was shot in Berlin. Now have a guess where I live? Yep, right! ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) A few days ago I went to the locations of the movie and tried to imagine how it could be real. Believe it or not - it`s been quite scary for me in some way.... Now, for thats my first post, please be indulgent, because my english may sometimes be a bit "strange", but I`ll try hard at getting better!!!

Herzlich willkommen, EveDallas ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Another EQ addicted on board ![:D](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/grin.png) Yes, I believe you. I understand what you mean. You wouldn't suppose, that Berlin would create in somebody's mind such a dark, convincing and eerie vision of Libria, am I correct? Wimmer has great imagination. I wish the world of Libria was even more complex. Anyway it really appeals to my imagination. To describe, what I fell about it, I'll use a Matrix comparision: I was plugged into this world while watching this movie for the first time. Now I'm still not able to pull the plug.

Eve, I have a question for you. What is the reception of EQ in Germany? I'm just curious...

MaWa, I`d like to be sure to answer correctly... do you mean reception of the public (like in movie boards etc.) or do you mean the more private reception, of how 5 of my friends reacted, when i "forced" them to watch EQ? ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) I believe you`re asking because of the "Nazi-Scene" (you know what I mean, don`t you?)...

I mean reception of the critics and the public. And yes, I also mean the Nazi associations, which are present in EQ. I have convinced 7 people to watch this movie. 4 of them liked it very much, 2 of them liked it, 1 person was quite indifferent. Now I'm "working" on 2 more friends. ;D Wish me good luck ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png)

;D Yep, I will... My rate (until now) is luckily 5 out of 5 friends were like: YEEHA, CAN YOU REWIND? CAN YOU REWIND ONCE MORE? ![;)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/wink.png) I would say that the average reception isn`t based around the Nazi associations (I`ll get to that later...). All reviews that I`ve read were like: Forget Matrix2, watch EQ, why is it not at cinemas? These are the basics that I`ve read nearly everywhere. I`ve found about 15 reviews and everyone said:It`s cool, watch that movie. Only that some moaned a bit more about plot holes than others, but hey... The resemblances to movies/books like 1984 or Brave New World is a point, but not put in as a negative aspect.... You have to understand that german people, especially my generation (like 19-25) are quite aware of their nations history and respect it as a matter of fact that we (unfortunately) can`t change anymore. We learn more about that period in school than about any other historical period, so when I see anything that has to do with the nazi regime or looks like see (i.e. in EQ) it`s mostly a reaction like: "Yes, yes, understood, now go on please." And most of my friends feel the same way. The problem is that we are somehow overdosed with it, and my generation is probably the first, that says: we are not guilty for what happend under the nazi regime. That`s the problem for many people: They feel guilty for things that their granddads did. I feel ashamed, yes, but not guilty. So it is always a difficult thing to show movies about the time of the nazi regime or with resemblances to it to a german audience, because we tend to watch that movies out of guilt and not out of interest. If you have questions please ask.... ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png)

All reviews that I`ve read were like: Forget Matrix2, watch EQ. "Forget Matrix 2, watch EQ" - I told this my brother. And after watching EQ he really found this movie better then the Matrix 2 ( so do I ). Let's say I had something to do with Germany ( mainly with German language ) during my high school. And yes, I can sense that guilt. My observation is, that the Germans are bound to this history period. They try to find the equilibrium ;D between remembering, what they done ( as a warning for the rest of the world ) and getting rid of the constant feeling of guilt. Correct me, if I'm wrong. BTW - Kurt Wimmer is a German name, so this guy has German roots. It must have affected the movie - at least on a subconscious level. German movies have something specific ( it's something in the atmosphere, I guess ) - and i could partially sense it in EQ.

I agree with you Dallas, that you should not feel guilty about the atrocities of WW2, but I am glad (well, not exactly glad, but you get what I mean) that you still remember it with shame. I feel like that every time they show some poor Iraqi orphan without arms or legs - not guilty, but ashamed. And I must say that, by and large, I have found that most German people sincerely regret those atrocities. It does anger me though, that some people in other countries (places like Algeria, for example) still deny that these things occured.
Anyway, back to the main discussion...

I unfortunately did not get to see it in theatres! I rented it and watched it everyday for a week! Then I hunted a copy down and bought it and have watched it almost everyday since! My first reaction was "Oh Holy Shit!! This movie is fantastic! I could not believe it didn't get a wider release! I was totally blown away witht the depth of character that Christian was able to capture. The range from inhuman to human was very impressive. He is so amazing I just can't say enough good things about him.

Thanks Deimos. You`re right... I was a bit scared that you may not understand what I wanted to say, but you understood it perfectly. ![:)](//storage.proboards.com/forum/images/smiley/smiley.png) Back to the main topic... Actually after the first shock I had when the movie ended I thought, I have to show this to EVERYONE I`ve ever known. Till now I was able to convince 5 people watching the movie and being as fascinated as me. I gotta find more... ;D
