Hellion has been hard at work with a huge amount of art projects recently, but she found time to illustrate one of the characters from Fate's Hand for me. Maxis Cane, the Justicar...want to know more? Read the story that is in-part inspired by Equilibrium, Trigun, Chaos Engine, Trinity Blood and a number of other sources. Fate's Hand...

Woooooooow, some amazing stuff there. I would rather say that this guy looks rather like pulled out from a futuristic sci-fi piece than as a Church member Not that I complain - I actually wondered whether not to put it as a wallpaper on my work computer ;D I won't have such constraints at home though Just two questions: 1) Is there a chance to see Kalon? ;D 2) What's the difference between Inquisitor and Justicar?

I would rather say that this guy looks rather like pulled out from a futuristic sci-fi piece than as a Church member Not that I complain - I actually wondered whether not to put it as a wallpaper on my work computer ;D I won't have such constraints at home though Just two questions: 1) Is there a chance to see Kalon? ;D 2) What's the difference between Inquisitor and Justicar? Fate's Hand is far more science-fiction/steampunk than fantasy, so for the Church we looked at an imposing near-gothic clothing and design with the large collars and flowing robe-like coats. There will be a picture of Kalon as well as a few other Fate's Hand characters The difference between a Justicar and Inquisitor is: The Inquisitors handle the day to day matters of investigation, but they must follow the Churches laws to the letter including those on the aprehension of a known felon. Kalon differs from this since he is the combination of both Inquisitor and Justicar in terms of what he can and can't do. On the can't do side, that's not much. The Justicars can terminate /anyone/ without reason, including another member of the Church if they were deemed a heretic, which is why I'm rather glad there's no face off between Kalon and Maxis... So think of the Inquisitors as special ops or secret agents, a little like the Clerics in EQ...they can terminate Sense Offenders on Father's order. A Justicar is the law and the letter of the Cardinal, so if you step out of line but one inch, you'll answer to them directly and probably terminally.

Looks like a Cleric from a neo-renaissance period. I like.

That would be essentially what Maxis is, except the book is steampunk dark fantasy...there are numerous sources I could list and will be doing, since I owe the focus of Fate's Hand to modern influences like Anime, Equilibrium and in some way the overpowering nature of Governments themselves -- so a bit of V for Vendetta.
It struck me as I was writing it, that while fantasy can be attributed in the main to Tolkien, this new breed of fantasy is far more focussed towards modern mediums of film, television, games and even the internet itself.
All it takes is one idea to strike you as interesting and you suddenly have a number of concepts all demanding to be utilised and incorporated, either as homages or as inspiration.
If you haven't read Fate's Hand Aikido Al, you might like it.

You know, I almost said "Steampunk Renaissance" but having not read the story I didn't know if you would take it wrong. I'll be sure to check out "Fate's Hand."

Steampunk Renaissance, that's a compliment I would gladly accept, as well as a moniker, genre whatever you want to call it. Wolf <3 Steampunk. I adore 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea and just about anything else that's got a combination of science/magic/technology...you name it. And yes. I had to borrow Gun Kata, hell, if the Japanese can put it in their Dekaranger series... But then again, there's Gun Kata in Trigun iirc. *Note: It is called a Combat Doctrine however, since the Fate's Hand Inquisitors and Justicars use weapons other than guns...one character uses knives and fights rather like V.

Will do, she does actually prowl the boards when she's got time. Next to Kalon, Maxis is one of my favourite characters in the book.
