Libby, terrific job - as always. A wonderful insight into Partridge's tortured soul. I liked especially the references to your previous fanfics. It makes the presented world really coherent.
One thing amazes me in EQ - the EQ universe can be expanded almost ad infinitum.
Maybe you should make those fics into a book? I'm not kidding here.

Thanks MaWa...it's nice to be appreciated. ;D It takes quite awhile to plan/write/edit/edit/edit, especially when things have to tie up...can't stand loose ends (that's the control freak teacher part of me!)
This story is really the middle one of what's turned out to be a kind of Prequilibrium trilogy- and unlike Douglas Adams HHGttG, there's just the three! ('Envoys' was just a short story that came to me on a boring car journey)
I wanted to explore what might have led Partridge to the church and also the complex relationships between the main protagonists. The DuPont thing was something that I considered quite feasible, really...
Although Kyra wasn't in this, I did feel that Partridge could easily make reference to her in what's my EQniverse..
As for a book? I'm about EQed out now but because I've so enjoyed writing these stories, I've actually begun planning a 'proper' novel which may or may not see the light of day...have to see...

Thanks Judas! ;D Hope you don't mind the reference to Kevin Halls...it's nice to cross over EQworlds.
The novel (sounds too grand for me really...)...oh, it's only in the skeletal stages yet, but it's - if you want to think about genre -kind of Philip Pullman/Garth Nix but without the magic...too much 'magic' based stuff about now. But, I know there's a long way to go... fun though!

Thanks muchly, MAX, murray and Ona. ;D ;D
Poor old Partridge...I thought he deserved a story of his own!
And cheers for the sig...I love PowerDVD for screengrabs. I also invested in PhototshopCS and so far have just scratched the surface of what it can do. The 'Mortal Thoughts' title was with CS, too.
...my inspiration comes from Father. ;D

Hey, thanks Libby - I did not suspect my wallpapers had such an influence on people... I must admit you have some real writting skills, but anyone should now that by now I also agree on the point that you should bundle it into a book. On my EC-10 scale this story get's the full 10 out of 10!!!

Between you and Father there's a serious amount of talent both written and visual *blushes again* Don't forget, ClericWolf, it's your writing expertise which gave me the push to try out my own ideas! Hey, thanks Libby - I did not suspect my wallpapers had such an influence on people... All your wallpapers/sigs are seriously good (I alternate them regularly on my desktop). I have an awful lot to learn before I could hope to approximate what you produce, but I really find it quite therapeutic, playing with layers/lighting and textures... I also agree on the point that you should bundle it into a book. On my EC-10 scale this story get's the full 10 out of 10!!! Glad you enjoyed it! Tbh, for my own personal satisfaction, I'm going to re-edit the first story (re-write more like, since it's a bit rough round the edges)...another ClericWolf influence ;D... Then I shall print it/bind it just to feel the weight and reality of the written word...but really, fanfiction's true home is sites like these...

Then I shall print it/bind it just to feel the weight and reality of the written word...but really, fanfiction's true home is sites like these... I understand what you say, but at least you should (like you said) print one for yourself - so you can find it back 20 years from now and still read it... Also IMHO there is that 'I don't know how to describe it' feeling going thru when you hold a real book instead of reading from a screen. But ofcoarse the screen does not deminish the quality of the work, only it's portability (even that might be a overstatement). I just hope a didn't make to mush of grammar mistakes...

That's so true...I think it has to do with the tactile experience and also, I love the smell of books - new or old. I can spend hours in bookshops and libraries, just absorbing the atmosphere... ;D I wondered, does the use of selective screenshots enhance the story? I must admit, I like choosing shots from the film which are as close as possible to the scene I'm describing (especially in the previous story where the Sweepers broke into the bad guys' warehouse to stop the illegal drug production...)

Libby, I read this fan novel and was left totally speechless...I loved it! It was really neat reading what might have been going through Partridge's head while he sat in that church. I love the way that you wrote this, and particularly your last line: "Tread softly, Preston." Thank you for writing it and giving it to us to read!!

I love the way that you wrote this, and particularly your last line: "Tread softly, Preston." Thank you for writing it and giving it to us to read!! Thank you so much for your comments...they are really appreciated. It was an idea I'd had for awhile, to explore what might have led Partridge to the Church that night and I wanted to tie it in to the other stories I'd written, creating a sense of continuity. It's really great when people take the time and trouble to comment on our fiction here on the site. I know that ClericWolf, Judas and MaWa are also always thrilled when members leave feedback. We all work hard on our fiction, trying to capture the essence of the EQniverse and positive comments such as yours make the effort all worthwhile. ;D

I just read "MORTAL THOUGHTS" and loved it! You have quite a gift for words and have put it to use beautifully with this story. It seemed as tho you actually knew Cleric Partridge. Since I'm new and don't know my way around yet, have you done any other stories about Partridge? Please excuse my lack of knowledge. He was my fave character in the movie; the decent human being with a tortured soul. Your story really brought out all his qualities. Thank you so much for doing it.

Thank you very much...greatly appreciated. Partridge fascinated me from the very first scene, standing behind Preston, his barely supressed look of pain and horror contrasting with Preston's 'cold god of death' expression. I've written a few fanfics, which are all in the Sense Offense section, but Of Night and Light is the one where I've explored some more of Partridge's motivations and relationship with Mary. If you read it, you'll meet my character Kyra Flynn, who Partridge helped to come off Prozium and who acts as mentor in her new world of feelings.

Libby's Partridge is one of the best I have seen.
*ClericWolf delurks to offer a rare compliment*
Then again all of us that do write fan-fiction try our hardest to attempt to keep the canon characters in line with the original portrayals.
I had a hell of a time with Preston in Ashes.
I think we have the most fun with our own characters though.
I know I do with Ezekiel K.

Thanks ClericWolf... ;D Creating new characters to interact with the existing ones gives us freedom but, you're quite right, it's vital to remain true to KW's vision. Now and then, I would have the soundtrack playing and have the DVD running (with the sound off) in the background to keep in touch...to look back and say 'Would this character really say that?' or 'Could that actually happen?' And dialogue can easily ring hollow if it's not in keeping with the character. I remember replaying Partridge's words over and over, parsing every sentence to get at the intonation and nuances of his speech. Kyra Flynn actually has a very clipped English accent. At least, that's my reasoning, because it's easier to base it on my own accent to deliver the lines in the best way. She's still quite formal in her speech most of the time...indicated by the Data-esque way she tends to avoid contractions...but is learning to be less so, especially in her attempts at 'conversation'...an art lost by the average dosed citizen. I'd be really interested to know how you hear EK in your head, ClericWolf.

Ezekiel is a very methodical man and is probably far more in-touch with the whole 'mechanical logical' killer side of the Grammaton Cleric than many of the remnants of Father's old regime/guard.
He is quite capable of the cold blooded murder of a small child that's playing out in the street, since to him Preston and Jurgen's coup that broke Libria out of its original state of mind is only a temporary setback.
So that smalll child is already a sense offender, plain and simple and with a diseased tree you cut it down before the disease can spread - even if it is a sapling.
If you remember Jason Issacs as Lucious Malfoy or as I recently saw him: Captain Hook...he's who I had in mind when EK first appeared for the look and whole menacing edge to his voice.
Vocally he's got the slight twinge of a preacher but certainly keeps to the British side of villainy (hence the Lucious Malfoy influence).

I can definitely see the Malfoy part...I'd given him a kind of darker Patrick Stewart voice..precise and deadly...never says anything irrelevant. ;D

I suppose Patrick Stewart would be another good voice model for EK yes. Again keeping to the dark and sinister side of our villainy that we seem to get cast as in so many roles.
Not as though it bothers me since actors like Christopher Lee are the epitome of English 'Bad Guy' for me. Why do I mention him, because he was my first thought-model for EK oddly enough.
But he got swapped out for someone a little younger.
