I've been keeping an eye on the reviews for EQ around the Net and am astounded by the extreme hostility some people in the minority seem to express towards it (critics included) and also at those of us who enjoyed the film. I am puzzled as to why this would be. Its only a film after all but it seems to be a personal insult and affront to them. Any clues as to why this would be??

Yeah, I know what you mean. I can accept someone saying that they just didn't like the story or the concept because those things are always in the eye of the beholder, but some of the reviews sound more like playground taunts than objective overviews of a professional film reviewer. Bizzare. I saw one newspaper review that called the action sequences "riseable trash." but didn't elaborate any further as to why, and the plot "idiotic," but once again gave no reasons. I felt like writing to the guy and asking if the only qulification needed to be a film critic was a random insult generator and a bad attitude. Fine, dislike the movie if you want, that's your right, but back your views up with more than just a vauge knife-attack! Sigh.

I noticed that too. The magazine Total Film gave it an absolutely horrible review, it called the stroyline "pure clag" and kept going on about how laughable and clichéd it all was. It also kept on comparing it to the Matrix, claiming it was a "Matrix-clone" and all this.

Indeed. After first seeing Equilibrium yesterday, I quickly got online to read some reviews (which I expected to be glowing)... however, it seems that most online reviewers prefer to trash on the film. Ah well... as long as I loved it, that is all that matters

I remember reading review in tv mags etc and although not directly slating the film, the writing had a distinctly disapproving tone which would have put me off seeing it had I not already seen it and was singing its praises to anyone who would stand still long enough! Having said that - many films that I think rock get bad reviews - it seems to be the thing to give films that are slightly off the beaten track of teen flicks a bad, or at least luke warm review I wrote a review of EQ for the sixth form newspaper and gave it 5/5!! ;D

Hardcore Matrix junkies will attack anything that has a decent fight scene and claim it's just a rip off. Although, they'll accuse movie such as Blade as copying Matrix... a movie that was made a couple years before Matrix. Some people just don't think, I suppose.
I don't understand the attacks on the plot, though. It's not overly confusing, nor is it boring or unoriginal... I suppose it's a matter of opinion, who knows?
I say we smite them all ;D

It's just because people were expecting rip offs of the Matrix, and once something came along that vaguely like it they slagged it off as if to prove they were right after all. The trendy holier-than-thou critics that is. (And that's putting it politely I can understand how it could be compared to films like 1984 (though admittedly I haven't seen it), Farenheit 451 and Logans Run etc, yet instead they choose to compare it with a film that has only vaugley similar fighting. Saying that, The two do have something in common, we follow the main character through a revelation that society is not what it seems, and.... well, that's it. I still can't believe people get paid for some of those reviews though. Sweet Jesus!
