So, I was busy outlining chapter 6 of CTI when I realised something about our dear Clerics.
Somewhere in the EQ observation thread, someone said First Class Clerics don't drive, they're being driven. Which is true at the beginning, when Partridge and Preston are sitting in the back seat, or when a Second Class Brandt drives Preston around.
However, both Partridge (off-movie, when he passes into the Nethers) and Preston (when trying to get rid of the puppy) also drive around alone
So I was wondering... are Clerics generally allowed to drive, and the having a driver thing is some kind of service? or are they not actually supposed to drive? Note that both Partridge and Preston only do it when they're up to something illegal.
Thoughts?

From my point of view they are of course allowed to drive. I think first class clerics are allowed to do everything, like Preston said in the scene, where they got into Mary's Home.
It is possible, that clerics are driven if they don't want to drive by them self. So it's a kind of service. But it seems, like clerics are going to secret missions and their rights allow them to leave the town without being checked through. Possibly clerics and sweepers are the only Librian citizens, who are allowed to leave the town in general, because the Nethers are dangerous. If the do, they would be suspected to be a member of the Underground. So they are imprisoned, like the citizens of the GDR were.

I suspect that "not driving" is more of a status thing ... like with Army officers, the protocol of which I'm familiar. If you 'have a driver' you're someone of rank. An Army Colonel wouldn't be caught driving h/hself on base during duty hours but for exceptional status. On the other hand, off duty, he certainly drives himself around like anyone else of course. Possibly CFCs are driven on official missions where there may be a chance of injury or something happening to them.

It seems like they have a sort of celebrity status. Sometimes celebs drive, sometimes they don't. Mayhap it is their choice...?

In some cases, perhaps. But remember, a Cleric's job is not just to use GK on armed Resisters. A Grammaton Cleric is carefully designed to be a walking reminder of the regime's power ... hence the menacing uniforms, the imposing building, all the trappings, etc. The very sight of a Grammaton Cleric should be enough to send most people considering Sense-Offence into a fright.
I would think that part of that remoteness and otherness would be being driven, on missions and on any sort of official business. Think about it. 99% of Librians have to take the tube. 1% own cars and can drive themselves .... so how rare is it to have not only a car but a driver at your disposal!! Like being a Commissar in 1940s Russia.
