For all you people who are into foreign films, this one should be mentioned. Now, as for historical accuracy, not so good. The film is form Russia. It was one of Russia's highest grossing films ever, so in that regard it is definitely a success. It depicts a Soviet Airborne unit, or VDV unit, in the closing months of the war in Afghanistan. The bits that the film definitely got right were the current versions of the small arms used by the Soviet Army at the time, the vehicles, actually almost all of the military stuff was right on. Where the writers and producers messed up was the actual events of the battle of height 3234. There really was a 9th Company, but they didn't suffer they way the soldiers in the film did. The real 9th Company didn't suffer nearly as many casualties as the film, and they had all the support that would be available to soldiers in such circumstances.
Other than the historical inaccuracies, this film showcases a subject that many westerners are completely ignorant about. I would definitely recommend it to military buffs and people interested in the events of Afghanistan from 1980 to the present. 8/10.
