I figure I can have one little "vanity thread" with my name on it. Purpose: Equilibrium "STUPH" on the internets that is interesting or at least causing enough baffle to yak about. Anyone else can contribute, but I promise to update with new linkage weekly. First we got Equilibrium mentioned in a good way in this Dark Knight blurb: www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16908But Super Ninja? arrooo? The Central Library's Fantasmo Cult Cinema Explosion monthly film series is doing a screening of the ever popular Blade Runner and following up with EQ describing it as " a film on its way to cult status." www.redorbit.com/news/entertainment/1433305/fantasmos_latest_flicks_are_in_the_future/I would love to go that. And because I thought it was funny, a Libertarian website reviewing the film: www.missliberty.com/Filmequil.htmlPS: I did see a review of Sex & the City lacking "Equilibrium" which made me laugh at loud. Libby said that one of the more infamous male characters was named John Preston. I don't think there is a lack of EQ. Definitely a lack of gunkata though!

showbizandstyle.inquirer.net/breakingnews/breakingnews/view/20080627-145086/Wanted-for-gunslinger-wannabesThe movie is comparable to the 2002 film "Equilibrium" where the gun-wielders are skilled in the fictional "gun kata." In fact, one of the scenes in "Wanted" is reminiscent of this fighting style.Er, what? I don't immediately make a connection of "tons of gunplay" = "EQ." The things that really reminded me of EQ was the colliding bullets effect which was in the original vision of the Dupont/Preston final fight. However there was a scene that was somewhat reminiscent of the Hall of Mirrors fight, although you could make a case for it to be more similiar to The Matrix's Bank Lobby scene.

I've yet to see Wanted, but I'll be watching out for that one since I like my OTT gun movies from time to time.

Wallpaper I haven't seen before. There is a ton of them out there that aren't on this website, but it amuses me because it looks like the cover of a John Preston workout video: www.wallpaperbase.com/movie-equilibrium.shtmlGUNKATA THE TETRAGRAMMATON WAY WITH JOHN PRESTON

I see that off to the side they ask for an email address if you want a different size. I think if enough people bug them they might order more. I did my bit!!

From 10 Most Influential Summer Releases (http://www.star-ecentral.com/news/story.asp?file=/2008/7/28/movies/1643838&sec=movies):
4. The Matrix (1999)
Wow. This film inspired a new generation of film geeks after our #1 film, and in fact it was the film many a geek would have loved to make, if we only had the money and talent. Back in its day, The Matrix redefined “cool” for the upcoming millennium. Underrated clone: Equilibrium (2002)
*headdesk* Back in it's day? All of nine years ago..."back in the day?" To quote Eddie Izzard: "Surely no one was ALIVE back then."
I know the clone reference is supposed to be an affectionate nod of approval for EQ, but it's not a CLONE. AUGH. Would people be saying that if they hadn't put that stupid quote on the DVD box?

Yes, well, you know ... 98% of Euro-America--those who watch television regularly--have all been brainwashed into thinking "The Matrix" to be some sort of untouchable masterpiece. You can tell such people by the way they call EQ terrible sci-fi movie. Which just goes to show you they know nothing about EQ or science fiction ... since EQ isn't even close to being a sci-fi movie.

I do love the Matrix. I also love EQ. But I'm constantly boggled by the perception that EQ is Matrix-cloned or inspired. To me they are entirely apples and oranges. I blame the comment on the stupid DVD box.

Hahahahahahahahahaha! *snort* Priceless! Well, not priceless really. But worth about 10 cents, or else however much per share Morgan Stanley paid for Lehman Brothers, whichever is more--I'm not sure.

Another mention for EQ, this time from The Star Online under their heading "Movies that slip under the radar." (Thanks to anna from CB.net for the heads up. Equilibrium (2002)
Written and directed by Kurt Wimmer (notice how my picks are directed mostly by the same people who wrote them?), this one came after The Matrix wowed everyone so much that the critics mostly panned it.
But it gained a slow and steady cult following through the Internet, and has begun to garner a more favourable critical response as well. First looks may be deceiving after all.
This was the Christian Bale movie in which I realised that hey, he’s the kid from Steven Spielberg’s 1987 Empire of the Sun, and to also realise that he had also grown to become one of the finest actors of his generation. (Yeah, okay – I’m one of those people who think his understated performance in The Dark Knight was not at all overshadowed by the brilliant performances put in by Heath Ledger and Aaron Eckhart).
The movie is set in a dystopian future in the fascist city-state of Libria. After a third world war, the remnants of humanity decide to excise the one thing that has always got the race in trouble: Passion. To remove all emotion, the citizens of the city are injected with a drug called Prozium. To remove all inspiration, art, music and literature are outlawed (no Singapore jokes, please).
Bale plays Preston, a “Grammaton Cleric” whose job is to track down and destroy all artistic artefacts, and to kill the people preserving or creating art. But the emotional and spiritual vacuum within him yearns for something more, and he slowly starts questioning his society’s edicts, and the city ruler’s commands.
Bale’s portrayal of a man slowly coming into emotional awareness, and thus having to struggle with his inner demons, is worth the admission price alone.
Equilibrium mixes elements of Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451, Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World and George Orwell’s 1984, but it’s not all gloomy serious fare – the Clerics are trained in a special martial art discipline that allows them to predict the actions of combatants and determine the trajectories of projectiles, and to thus adopt a stance and use a series of movements to dodge bullets.
This series of movements? “Gun katas.”
Yep, unlike Neo in The Matrix, they still have to dodge bullets, but they do it in fascinating style and with a certain grace. Gun katas rock. ’Nuff said.www.star-ecentral.com/news/story.asp?file=/2008/11/10/movies/2469054&sec=movies

One million years ago when I joined the group (back when velociraptors practiced the gunkata), there was a website from American-Buddha.com called "The Perfect Geometry of Death" which had extensive EQ commentary/articles and screencaps. I made copies of everything, and I'm glad I did because they went members-only for awhile. Now it's back in the form of the Nader Library (amusingly enough) which is part of American Buddha's online library. I'm sure a bunch of the newer folk haven't seen this: www.naderlibrary.com/perf.geom.toc.htm

It's not bad, but I'm not a big fan of the face. There are some awesome Dark Knight heads which could be modified though.

Gunkata is my chosen theme for November, and I found the following fun link: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/GunKataI love this quote: In his next film, Ultraviolet, Wimmer further expanded the technique by allowing an unarmed Action Girl to assume such positions among the multiple enemies so that they shoot each other instead. May serve as a pseudoscientific justification for the existence of graduates of the Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy.

Here's something interesting, EQ has made wikiquotes: en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Equilibrium_(2002_film)Check out the international tag lines for the film. I hate tag lines in general, but it's interesting to see the different flavors of cheese.
