I’m not too familiar with most of the newer Sonic games. The only new Sonic game I’ve played enough of is Shadow the Hedgehog, which I actually like very much. I’m not sure how Secret Rings got relatively good reviews in comparison to its predecessors, though.
First and foremost, the controls are not very good, and this really is what the game is all about. The game is controlled by a Wiimote held sideways, and Sonic turns when you tilt it to the left or right. A good word to describe the gameplay would be “stringent.” Sonic automatically runs when the game starts, and the levels are mostly one-dimensional, offering no chance for exploration; the on-rails gameplay doesn’t provide much flexibility. Mostly what you do is move Sonic slightly to each side to avoid object.
Often it is necessary to destroy objects with a homing attack, not so much because their enemies, it’s just that the levels are designed so that you must destroy something to continue. The homing move is extremely convoluted. You must hold a button to slide when you approach an object. Then a target shows up on the object. When the target turns red, you release the button to jump, then jerk the remote forward to attack. Try this when you’re moving super fast. One level I had to start over ad nauseam because some of these enemies had to be destroyed in tandem in order to cross a body of water.
The obnoxious rock soundtrack does not help either. I sold the game back at Gamestop.
Overall Rating: 1/10
