...and I'm going to post HALF of a "review".
Well, I couldn't take it no more.
Curiosity was too high, and waiting time laughably long.
So I "d'ed" it.
Uhm, yes, sorry.
I had to know what the whole issues were about.
*BUT*, I stopped seeing after some 45 minutes, so I still have to go and pay for it (plus I'll buy the DVD and all, don't worry!)
The .avi's quality is horrible, you barely understand the images, you practically don't get the music (which, I'm told, is good), I also lost many words since I'm not truly english speaking and the sound was bad.
So, of course I've not even seen a TRUE half of the movie, yet.
But I have some comments already, which will be a bit unusual, maybe, comparing to what you read everywhere.
CGI
This is mainly what is dooming the movie, imho. I'm sure even many of the haters would speak differently if the CGI were good, even about the other aspects, like acting.
Bad CGI can push you to a total "disbelief" state... and alas, the CGI seem very bad.
The motorbike chasing scene was... urg!!!!!! I didn't expect something like that. I imagined faulty pictures, but not a completely fake scene.
Really, they shouldn't have ever released a scene in that sorry state.
DIALOGUE
Call me mad, but I found it BRILLIANT.
Really did.
Come on, how many times you see movies and get the feeling of a script PLANNED too much?
In truth, people can't always say the right, or the smartest thing. Usually they just *talk*, and in rage, they'll speak as it comes.
Dialogue in UV appear simple, but, finally, NATURAL.
I liked it. A lot. A courageous choice.
ACTING
Uh? What was so bad about it?
Maybe that Nerva guy isn't so much of an actor, but the rest seemed fine.
Fichtner is great (as always), the boy does his job, and Milla... well, Milla. I did notice something strange about her performance. I do understand why some say she's no good... and I found why.
There are some situations that recur, in movies.
Even when everything else around is peculiar, you necessarily meet often similar situations that are "always acted the same".
There are some way of acting that are canonical, and everyone accepts them (even unconsciously) as "good" acting, and consider anything that looks different "bad" acting.
Well, Milla plays strangely, and many don't get it.
I don't know if it's bad or good, but it works for me, in some moments she's almost moving.
I like her style a lot, even though it doesn't smell of scholarship.
STORY/TONE
Not having seen it all, I can't fully comment on it, but it seems good to me. Simple, but in a good meaning.
Despite what everyone says, it seems to me an actually touching story, mostly because of Violet's character's sadness.
And my, I could almost TOUCH her sadness.
I mean, she's alone, alone, ALONE in that almost "void" world.
She seems misplaced and lost more than she seems vindicative.
She seems *dying* MORE than she seems strong and unstoppable.
Can't believe people didn't get THESE are her weaknesses, we didn't need to see her beaten up by the bad guys.
Mostly this is what surprised me the most: everyone was talking about the "light" tone of UV, but to me (maybe also because of the different perception of colors and backgrounds offered by the poor quality AVI) the tone seemed REALLY sad, and I felt immediately for Violet.
FUTURE STUFF/GADGETS
Wimmer is a Genius.
Nothing else to add.
HALF-FINAL COMMENT
I think I'll love the movie to despair (when I'll see the whole thing, and in the proper way), but I'll despair because of the CGI, too!
That chase was really, really awful.
And the fights are totally edited: my God, they SO are.
Yet, the movie shows what every other movie seems to have lost: IMAGINATION.
Imagination, I say.
Let's hope in a miracle, that some Deus Ex-Machina will show up and fix those damned effects and give this movie the shape it deserves!
