I do really not know if I dare to write this, but it`s about Kurt Wimmers latest movie, Ultraviolet. I sooo looked forward to see it last Friday, but I was gravely disappointed unfortunatly. It was like a commercial for some product that you can stand for 30 seconds, but NOT the amount of time that that movie had. How Wimmer can have gone from a movie with almost cultstatus (that hardly no one can object to) to a movie soooooooo disappointingly bad I do not know. I`m truly sorry if I have upset someone by writing this, but I have to be honest. Wimmer could have done it very, very, very, very, very, very, very much better. This makes me fear that his future movies will be in the same class as Ultraviolet and that would certainly mean catastrophe for all Equilibriumfans!

Remember, Ultraviolet was heavily edited by Screen Gems. I expect the movie would have been better had they let Wimmer remain in control. (Certainly the novelization shows it.)
And for all the mistakes he may have made himself, I'm pretty sure Wimmer will learn from them and do better in his next movie. From the commentary in EQ alone you can tell that he's the kind of director that really pays attention to these things.

I think Wimmer simply thought he had more money then he really had. He had only 10 million more then EQ, yet planned to shoot action sequences far more complex then anything in EQ. The attempt was admirable, despite the edits, and he put a lot of thought into the concepts of the world, but he was over ambitious.
Regardless of the comedic intention of the dialogue, the same pulpy tone has been done before and much better. The only line that made me chuckle was the machine's reaction to Violet's arsenal.
I'd be interested to learn whose idea the credits were. They really gave the impression that UV was a comic book, which makes me assume it was a product of the studio (since they were pushing the "comic-bookness" of the film in their marketing), but it was also my favorite aspect of the film (which makes me hope Wimmer had something to do with it...). However since the film is not based off a comic, its inclusion is pretty ridiculous and misleading to the average film goer.
I was hoping for something in the vein of Blade 2 - silly, high-concept and very fun. While I was able to enjoy Wimmer's ideas conceptually (the motorcycle sequence is quite cool if you look past the effects), but the execution overall was mediocre. Even if the appropriate sound effects and violence and even if the additional story sequences were restored, Wimmer overestimated his ability to squeeze a budget.
And if i must nit pick... when Violet brings back 6 due to a tear infecting him... how come he registers as "dead" to the scientists and doctors. They weren't just assuming he died, because they clearly "scan" his vitals. If he was dead, it wouldn't matter if he was a hemophage, he was dead. Not a huge problem, but the fact that 6 was brought back the same way characters on Pokemon are brought back to life kind of irked me.

Not a huge problem, but the fact that 6 was brought back the same way characters on Pokemon are brought back to life kind of irked me. According to the book, victims of the hemophage virus go into a death-like coma for the first few hours after they have acquired the virus, while the virus wreaks havoc on their DNA. Of course, since this wasn't explained in the movie, it leaves a bit of a plot hole . . .

Regardless of the comedic intention of the dialogue, the same pulpy tone has been done before and much better. Violet: "I am a Titan, I am a monolith." My husband whispering in my ear in the theater: "I am a leaf on the wind." Heh! That was my favorite line in the film.
