Thought of starting this thread for proper exclusive discussion on the Unrated version of Ultraviolet. I bought the disc, but haven't seen it all the way through yet. So for anyone that has yet or will, please contribute.

I watched part of it last night (not all of it since I was tired and couldn't stay up that long) and I have to say that the extra footage actually helps the story. The VO that Violet does explaining about how the virus changes people makes her more "human" since we know what it means when she says she only has a few hours to live. Once I have watched the rest of it then I'll come back with more thoughts.

Hi I just found this forum, and I was going to buy the Ultraviolet unrated dvd, but today I found that the region 3 is going to be a 2 dvd set and has some deleted scenes. Does this dvd also have deleted scenes or just the making off?

Just got through the unrated DVD - I definately feel it is a big improvement over the theatre version. A lot less "WTH" moments caused by bad cuts. You get the backstory filled in much better with the addition of just a bit more screentime (was that so difficult sony?!) and I feel that this helped the flow of the film. From what I can tell the library scene is the only extended fight scene and it looks much sweeter - sort of makes you wonder what the other scenes would could have looked like. while the sound is better (at least the lips sync up - didn't in the theatre) its still unimpressive - not sure why IGN is giving them kudos for the sound... Its odd to me that this is an unrated dvd, because it could easily passoff as a pg-13 rating. Not much blood or gore at all (i'm not into either but it intrigues me why they passed it off as unrated).
While I still feel that the movie's full potential is not outm had sony released this version in the cinemas, i believe it would have done a lot better. They really shot themselves in the foot.
Just starting the extras- I notice that Wimmer is missing from the "making of" interviews (at least in part I - can't finish the others as I have to jump on a plane now) - rather jarring...
I must admit that after watching this DVD I felt that Wimmer really had something going - the use of Shanghai and Hong Kong, the last fight scene using fire and steel, the beautiful neon-highlighted settings - I appreciated them a lot better with this dvd than in the cinema. However, i still can't help but feel that the movie was taken from him before it was truely ready... In all if you want to get a copy of Ultraviolet, short of a directors cut edition, this is the dvd to get.

No, wimmer doesn't say anything in the extras, well not for the camera just on the set to other people. And I have said it before, where are the deleted scenes? In the beginning they were going to be on the disc. It was even written on the back of the dvd case. Do they have some plans with it? Also check out the Part 5, It has the camera angle of the library fight they used to make one of the screensavers.

I watched the whole thing and my only question is:
Why in the hell didn't they release this version instead?!?!?!?
It would have been a little better I think.

More than a little, it would have been half better than the cut they made. Hell, they're screen gems, the company that thinks the audience wants to see only action. They're known for wierd things.

Well I watched the theatre version on the plane (they were showing it ironically) and I think the fight scenes have changed little (maybe a frame or two max) if at all in the unrated version - but the story is much better in the unrated version. At least with the unrated version you get to know what a hemophage is and why they call them vampires (even if it is through a voiceover) - in the cinema I sat through the first 15 mins going, "what the heck is a hemophage" and wondering "why do they have fangs?!".
One scene in particular caught my attention in the unrated version - after fleeing with the case, before she gets to the chino tower a huge section was cut in the cinema version. While not much action it definately should have been included. There's one part where she's running away from the health ministry people and then suddenly she say's " i'm clear" after running down a stairwell. The climax that was building up was abruptly and uncomfortably killed - at least with the uncut version they SHOWS how she gets clear and the climax is allowed peak and ease slowly down.
I must admit though watching it a second and third time makes me appreciate the film a lot more. With a better understanding of the storyline in the unrated version, I was able to appreciate the way the film was shot instead of getting hung up on what the heck was going on...

Wimmer must really be pissed off. No screen time in the docs and no commentary. The docs were ok. Will watch the movie tonight or tommorow..

Did anyone else think that milla came off a little "airheaded" on her commentary? Me and my friend had to watch this movie again to make sure it was as bad as we remembered it and there is just no excuse for what we saw. Im just waiting for wimmer to make another movie to get this bad taste out of my mouth.

To daga: the "Unrated" tag is by now a standard trick to pull in some extra buyers who are hoping for gratuitous sex/violence/gore--the lure of forbidden fruit, and all that. I remember when the "unrated" version of the Pamela Anderson (Lee) vehicle "Barb Wire" came out. There was NO difference except for perhaps 1 second of breast-flashing in the opening title dance sequence. I felt this "unrated" version of UV hung together better, though the theatrical version didn't lose me. Then again, I had professional schooling in Dada theatre, mummery, and mime, so I am used to having to mentally fill-in-the-blanks when it comes to choppy action.

I bought the uncut DVD and I really enjoy it. The picture quality is well done, plus the added scenes are cool.
the added backstory is obviously good (enough for me to raise the movie from 2.5 stars to 3 stars for me).
I don't know why it was cut out, what was left out didn't even take long, and none of it qualifies as anything more than PG13. I thought the White Room fight would be crazy since the cover gave us the idea there would be BLOOD in it. But, Screen Gems sits on a throne of lies.
I loved the extended Library fight. Nick Chinlund gave a good moment of comic acting that scene. I loved the gas-tube cutting; it's kinda a cool little thing that increased the impact of kills like the visor shattering in Eq. And then there was that thing she did with that last guy.

The last guy got more than he wanted. But I don't think it's enough yet. Two more spins and then we're talking. But to talk seriously, I think it's a really big letdown that the white room fight had no blood, but the back cover shows it perfectly.
