Attention fellow Equilibrium lovers!!! I just got news that the video game company, Acclaim, is making a game called "100 Bullets" based on a DC comic. I used to work for that company at the time Equilibrium was in the theatre, and I brought the idea to an exec about making a video game like that. The idea was shot down.... or so I thought. Now I saw a preview for the game "100 Bullets" and what do I see??....... Gun-kata!!!! I don't think this is part of the comic at all. I think they are just using gun-kata to spruce up a shitty game.
Does anyone know the email for Kurt Wimmer? I've been looking for it online but can't seem to find it. Pass this info along to the others. I think Wimmer might be able to take some legal action here and prevent Acclaim from using gun-kata. Their games, in my opinion, are nowhere close to being decent. Don't let them ruin Kurt's masterpiece. Any info for Kurt's email or the awareness of this crime, email me at jim_b_bones@yahoo.com Thanks!

We've already been discussing the game in the Pub. equilibrium.proboards17.com/index.cgi?board=Pub&action=display&thread=1084492008But most people haven't minded the fact that there is a bit of gun-kata going on. And while Gun Kata was conceptualized by Wimmer, I don't think we'll see him taking legal action for others using it. If taking legal action over these sorts of conceptual ideas was the case, I'm sure we would have seen a lot more legal cases going on with every film maker/game developer that ripped off "bullet time" for their films/games.

I don't know how much control Wimmer would actually have over something like this. I think if anyone would actually sue it would be the owners of EQ's copyright Dimension and then they really haven't seemed to shown much interest in the film. I could be wrong.
BTW, I still have not taken a look at the trailer because I dislike downloading/watching trailers on my PC. This might have to be an exception.

I actually have one more thing to say though...this would truly be a good jab in the eye to Miramax/Dimension. They had the corner on something good...something awesome and they blew it!! They could have been the first to bring this out in a game format but they choice to bury it...it truly is a shame!!
Rant over...I now return you to your regularly scheduled surfing...

100 Bullets is a very famous comic book series that already had very stylized action. This is not an EQ rip off. Perhaps some cues are taken, but geez EQ is one of the biggest rip off films of all time. The entire film is more or less a new version of 1984, Brave New World, Farienheit 451 and Judge Dredd rolled into one (with a couple others).
I highly doubt that they are ripping EQ off. Looks like they are borrowing Max Payne engines though.
Edit: Also Gun-Katta wasn't the first time i saw gunplay and melee arts fused. Final Fantasy 8 had sword gun play, the john woo film Tiger on Beat had chainsaw gunplay, Blade 2 had axe gunplay, EQ has martial art gunplay. You are really can't be serious to say that Wimmer could sue them for that technique. I hope Wimmer lets other directors use Gun-katta. What if Chow Yan Fat stopped action stars from using double fisted gun shooting while sliding down stairs or charging down a corridor. Heck, EQ took a cue from Matrix by having a government lobby shoot out.
Just to let you all know I love EQ and wouldn't be here if I didn't, but don't over react if perhaps someone wants to expand on someone elses ideas. And the game btw looks good.

That's all very true, Kaiser. Although Wimmer may have been the first to consciously integrate Gun Kata into a film, similar techniques have been used before.
I think Steven Segal even uses it in Under Siege, mostly during his showdown with Tommy Lee Jones's character.

I don't think it would matter, unless 'Bullet time' as first introduced in the matrix and later on used in Max Payne - gun kata is basically just a set of moves based on martial arts and ballet. So it's unlikelly you can speak of any copyright infrigement. The only copyright infigement that could happen to stand is when they would use the word GUN KATTA. But even here, I'm not sure MIRAMAX-DIMENSION did care to take a pattern on the word.

I don't think it would matter, unless 'Bullet time' as first introduced in the matrix and later on used in Max Payne the strange thing about bullet time is that no one actually knows who thought of it first or what medium used it first. it was in buffalo 66 and also in a country music video before the matrix came out

And there was a Hong Kong film in the 80s that had the camera literally follow a bullet in slow mo.

I was reading a discussion about bullet time on another board recently & the topic of its application to various media. While it's been a registered trademark in movies via WB/Wachowskis, it doesn't apply to games - and Remedy/Rockstar have it registered in the realm of video games for Max Payne....which is probably explains why Enter The Matrix uses FOCUS instead of BT for when the action slows down. Well thats my addition of "useless trivia" for the day.

Saw the trailer awhile ago. I think Wimmer would consider it more of a homage than a rip-off. If anyone was to sue it would be Miramax and like Jen said they blew it on this film already..

personally, i dont care if they did directly rip-off EQ to put gun-kata in a game. i mean, think of what that means...
-GUN-KATA... IN A GAME! that means you get to control it and stuff. its the first time besides when i am alone in my house or when i am trying to explain gun-kata to someone who's never heard of it that i get to actually do some.
