How do you do Brandt's little sword spin flourish? I think it looks freakin awesome, and I'd really like to learn how to do that.
Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks Mis

Not a clue...It appears to me almost to be some sort of "salute" but I could be wrong. I guess you could practice it in the mirror until you got it right or something.

My advice would be to study a martial art or undergo some sword training, it's a Hollywood affectation, yes it looks cool but the only way to learn anything like that is to either enrol in some kind of stunt course, or practise yourself until it looks 'Ok'

I always regarded Brandt's 'posturing' with the katana as a sign of his arrogance. Contrast it with Preston's much purer form...the split second timing and the conservation of energy (not to mention the underhand style).
When they are 'practising' (where we also get that premonition of what's going to happen to Brandt in the end!) Preston is still the superior fighter (despite the early effects of being off the dose). Brandt expends a lot of effort in showing-off, but ultimately he loses...just as he does in the end....

Maybe you want to fix that post up Libby, it seems there are some words missing Yeah, a friend said that Brandt’s death at the end was such an anticlimax without a proper showdown fight. I pointed out that the fight had already taken place whilst they were sparring, and in the end Preston gave the “let’s see who’s the real master of this shit” fight, and promptly wasted Brandt, showing that Brandt was never, ever, actually a worthy opponent at all. Basically, Preston was just toying with him earlier. Oh yeah, in order to get that little spin thing, you have to use your wrists quite a lot. Be sure to do it slowly at first, cos if you go too fast you’re gonna hurt yourself trying to out. Also make sure you twist your upper torso when you do the maneuver.

It appears to me almost to be some sort of "salute" but I could be wrong. I've been thinking about this too. I figured it is the fastest way to get the sword in position. I compared it to the moves that for example Neo made before attacking in his first fighting scene (against Morpheus). Just to warm up the muscles and get the right pose. By the way, Preston has some sort of sword spin as well. It's much less complicated, just some sort of circle with the tip of the blade.

I know this is a bit late, but the spin is a side defense manuever used in kendo. It's used several times during a kata.
