The following was posted in the guestbook & since I currently do not have the time to find all of the interview info & don't have a clue about Bale's previous experience except for dance, I thought I would post it here...
[/i]
If anyone wants to help answer some of these I'd be more then obliged...(I'll tackle some when I have the time as well.)

I don't know if this helps, but CB did have months of martial arts training back in 1992 when he was shooting Newsies. The director said that Bale has a good use of moves like kicking, punching, and spinning.

You have to remember that in the run up to shooting of the fight scenes in The Matrix, the actors had to receive a fairly quick course of martial arts, and look how well they moved.

And such a brave one too, posting as a guest.

Wait. MC Hammer's career is dead? You mean I shouldn't be wearing those kinds of pants anymore? When did this happen? ?? Anyhoo..... Bale seems to have a grace about him that I would either contribute to years of dance training or martial arts. Or, there are a few of those rare types that I have seen, with a natural grace that just soaks up both dance and various forms or the Arts with little or no problem, looking like they have been studying for a lifetime. dev

I seem to remember Kurt Wimmer saying something in the commentary about 'hiring dancers next time instead of martial artists'. I also seem to remember from somewhere (a fansite or something) that CB actually trained in ballet...? Not sure how true it is though

I believe you're on to something, JudasFm. I, too, read something or heard something about Bale being trained in ballet, which is said to be one of the most grueling athletics. I also recall KW saying what you refer to in the Director's Commentary. Those in The Matrix movies trained for several months for the first film, and for a bit longer for the remaining films. And they executed the moves very well. I'm thinking Bale must have received similar martial arts training and also, was already trained in dance from other films, perhaps he simply needed to brush up. I would really be interested in knowing the martial arts styles portrayed in EQ. P.S. L.O.L., dev.

I agree with JudasFM. CB is a trained classical-ballet dancer.I also saw it in one of his fansites. So therefore martial-arts training is just a walk in a park for him.

I think the problem here may be that martial artists are approaching the film from that perspective while the rest of us just as an action film. When Wimmer states that the gun-butt sequence was only created in about half an hour I really do not think that we are talking about months of training for ANY sequence (I could be wrong). This concept just seems difficult for some to fathom given the outcome that was captured on film. In his comment about his cameo on my Gun Kata page Wimmer mentions the following... "To find and hire a dancer or athlete would have required paying them not only for their performance on the day, but to spend several days to a week learning gun-kata choreography... " I think for actual training info the best I have found so far is the interview with Jim Vickers...

Sorry about that, guys!

It seemed somewhat out of character for you to do something like that Mike. Probably why I held back from using the 'Pole of Retribution' on you.

The last thing I need is a steel pole crushing my face and sending me flying into a second-story round window on a count of my nosy brother. and in case you're interested, Gun Kata will be administered on my bro's face for being a jerk

I think you're right, in that the outcome captured on film is of such high quality and choreographed so well, I assumed, like many perhaps, that it took months of training to execute the moves. But EQ was filmed in 54 days. It must have been Bale's already attained abilities which made all the action scenes look so great. I wonder how much training Diggs and MacFayden had.

I wonder how much training Diggs and MacFayden had. I think in the interviews on the DVD, Taye Diggs talks about two straight days of fighting practice (which he obviously thought was brilliant)

Actually, they THOUGHT they'd receive a 'fairly quick course' but ended up having to work at it solidly every day for MONTHS! And Bale did ballet? That doesn't surprise me. A lot of martial arts look like an extremely beautiful dance, especially the film styles. Check out the Teahouse Fight, in The Matrix Reloaded, between Neo & Seraph. Especially when they show them performing spinkicks and leg blocks it really looks like a duo dancing. I love it.

Especially when they show them performing spinkicks and leg blocks it really looks like a duo dancing. I love it. I think this brings up a very good point about martial arts, films, dance & choreography. It is very difficult to get an "actor" to look right on film especially opposite a master. Case in point - the lightsaber duel between Darth Maul & Qui-Gon Jinn. Ray Park is so much obviously better on screen then Liam Neeson that there really is no way he should have lost that fight. In my hum. op. Neeson's moves appear "sloppy" by comparison. I don't think a crash course in martial arts is always a wise move especially if a true master of precision is the opposite opponent of a mere actor. Here in I think that Wimmer has the right idea in using those with dance trailing. Their movements can be crisper with a limited amount of actual "martial arts" training.

I agree with that, and those with dance training should be used to performing katas, once they're taught them of course.
Interesting you should mention Ray, I used to be good friends with him before we lost contact. He used to live not very far from me at all.

I think I was the only person in the theatre at the first screening of the Phantom Menace that was pissed of when Darth Maul died (it was a cheap death too). He just stood there & let it happen, a bit like a certain other favourite "character" of mine....

But then again, lots of villains tend to go out like that, most of them taken down by cheap shots.

OK, now I'm just green with envy!! Where's my Prozium dose when I need it??!! I studied Karate and Kung Fu for a while, but for me it was always the grace and form of the art not the fighting side - Ray moved on to much better things, and my path went towards the written word.
