EQUILIBRIUM vs DEMOLITION MAN (comparison)

I think EQ and Demolition Man have some ideas in common. Here are the comparisons:

EQ
1) Human behavior is changed through a drug called "Prozium" that erases human emotions.

2) A group of outcasts called "The Resistance" live below the ground seperating themselves from the changed society. They refuse to take Prozium thus they are known as 'sense offenders'.

3) The film takes place in the future...the world of Libria.

4) Father is the man responsible for changing the future's society.

5) Two of the main characters that were once allies become enemies: Preston & Brandt.

6) The MAIN character(good guy) who becomes victorious in the end is named JOHN Preston.

7) Brandt is black.

8) Law Enforcement Officers in this future are called 'Grammaton Clerics'.

9) Cleric's have a defense style called "Gun Kata".

10) There is a relationship between Preston & Mary O'Brian.

DEMOLITION MAN
1) Human behavior does not change with a drug but people have become a society of peace and love.

2) Outcasts also live below the ground and they are known as 'scraps'.

3) The film takes place in the year 2032.

4) Dr. Cocteuo(spelling?) is the man responsible for changing the future's society.

5) Two of the main characters that were once enemies in the past become enemies in the future: John Spartan & Simon Phoenix.

6) The MAIN character(good guy) who becomes victorious in the end is named JOHN Spartan.

7) Simon Phoenix is black.

8) Law Enforcement Officers in this future are called 'San Angeles Police Department(SAPD)'.

9) Since the future has become a society of love and peace, the SAPD were never trained to handle any type of violence(no one knows how to fight). Perhaps everyone in the story doesn't know how to fight.

10) There is a relationship between Spartan & Lenina Huxley.

strangest thing - a friend and i were just putting together a list of similarities between EQ and Sound of Music ;D

seriously dude...you make some valid points, but the others a bit of a stretch. I'd say 6, 8 and 10 (and even 7) are kind of thin.

No offense but by thin, I mean the points are not distinctive or unique enough to be conclusive. They might be more of a coincidence.

I have 3 close friends all named John. It's a very common name. I'm sure we can put together a list of similar movies with protagonists named John.

8) one group is called "clerics", the other is "SAPD"...other than the religious reference ("cleric" and "angel") I don't get it

10) Mary O'B. is a sense offender, Huxley is a cop. I see nothing in common in their roles other than both being leading ladies.

and 7) neither role is race-specific; they could have been played by white actors without any changes in the story. The actors just happened to be black.

You know what, I'm sorry for not being detailed. Every comparison I made I didn't mean to be equal. Yes, I know they are more of a coinsidence like you said. I'm just saying that those are the movie comparisons, nothing else.

I also didn't compare Mary O'Brian & Huxley together. I just compared that they both had a RELATIONSHIP in the film they're in.

"The actors just happened to be black." Yeah I know. Like I said, I'm just comparing. And if you say again that they are more of a coinsidence, I agree.

(Hence Sandra bullocks name in the movie) The character in the book BNW was named John savage, so there is your John connection, not thin at all.[/shadow]

Interesting that you should resurrect this thread today since I just saw Demolition Man yesterday for the first time ever. BAHAHAHAHA!!! What a wonderful flick!! Loved it!! A thrilling unapologetic romp.

That bit about Schwarzenegger being president had me on the floor especially with all the buzz recently in the news!! Too funny!! ;D

And yes I can see some parallels between it and EQ but these are mostly superficial IMHO. Many sci/fi's have similarities. The problem is that there are just not enough of these type of films made.
