I was wondering what everyone thinks Preston is going to do after we last see him in the film. What do you think his life will be like now that his world is changing?

Your'e just trying to write a story and nick our ideas aren't you! When the film ended I imagine that everyone would end up just standing around outside in awe of everything. -all a bit like Logan's Run then- Who knows? Personally I don't care, the story (and any other fan stories) are set in Libria, and are about the inhabitants of Libria in the society set up the council. Anything after or before that isn't about Equilibrium is it? Though saying that, Preston will no doubt make Roller-Disco's popular again to keep everyone from going to war.... Maybe.

Personally, I like the route David Huang's fan fiction took. I'd like to think that after those moments of bliss the transition would actually be a difficult one. I realize that Preston wasn't in his story but it would be interesting to find out what Preston was involved with during it. Fan Fiction - The Cleric

I have just been curious about what everything would be like after the last scene of the movie. I mean, do you think some people would refuse to stop taking the Prozium that they still had in their guns, the Prozium that didn't get destroyed in the bombing of the factories?

well I wanted to write fanfic but am too lazy but I had some thoughts about Preston's future... my idea was that his kids would be accidentally killed in the fighting - after all, even among sense offenders, there are bound to be some extremists who would attack the monastery - and in his grief, with nothing left to hold him to Libria, he would leave the city on a journey of repentance and self-discovery. From high priest of the tetragrammaton to pilgrim penitent. He'd go off into the wilderness and become a hermit/philosopher, trying to justify or come to terms with the wrongs he had done, and wondering if he had done right by killing Du Pont and then by leaving Libria. And then he would return to Libria after his years of isolation, in their hour of need.... ;D

Hey skippythegator, that's an interesting way to take the story. Let me know if you ever decide to write it...

The messages here give rise to interesting thoughts... At the end of EQ, I can't help feeling saddened at Preston's loss of Mary. Throughout the film, although they did not have a great deal of contact, it appears that Preston truly loves her. I particularly like his reaction on the test when Jurgen says just her first name, "Mary". So, although Preston cracks a slight smile at the end, I can't help crying over Mary. They would have been great together. I wish she could have been part of Preston's future...

I guess I'm one of those few people that really didn't trust Mary at all.
1. I think she was a plant to entice both Preston & Partridge. I'm still at odds as to whether or not she was a cognizant participant in this ... even so I still question her innocence.
2. It's obvious Preston had feelings for her but it's less certain whether or not she actually felt something for him.
I'm just not sure about her...

I agree that Mary didn't seem very innocent. She always had kind of a devilish look on her face, and she never showed as much emotion as Preston did. Well, that could have been partly because Preston was feeling everything for the first time, but still... The only thing I don't understand is if she was a plant, did she know they were actually going to kill her?

Hi, JenGe and Balehead. Thanks! I was not looking deeply enough into Preston's and Mary's relationship. Your thoughts are provoking. I tended to view their relationship more through Preston than Mary. He seems to be tortured by his desire for her. I love the way he says, "Look at you." And then, softly, "Look at you" when they first break in and are looking in the mirror. I am pretty foolish to think Mary is going to automatically fall in love and continue with the man who killed her lover, Partridge. More likely, if she escaped, she would want to kill Preston or hurt him somehow. Although, he was taking Prozium when he killed Partridge. But in the scene where the alarm sounds for dosing and Mary observes that Preston is feeling, she seems truly compassionate towards him, I thought. "What'll you do?" And she offers her hand. If Preston had been successful in preventing her execution, well...maybe they could have had a future together. She did have a devilish look most of the time. And she may very well have not been trustworthy. I guess I'm just a hopeless romantic.

Hi Trinity! I definitely see your point, too, though. Mary does seem really sympathetic when she says "What'll you do?". I'm always kind of confused at that part because she winks at him and smiles right before she gets all sensitive. Maybe she has a split personality

It may take me awhile. My site it glitching again... No problem, Jen. No hurry. I just discovered the script on this website which will lend me many hours of enjoyment. I wish I had more time to explore this wonderful website. All other EQ websites I have visited have completely paled in comparison to this one...they can't even compete! Thanks for everything!

OK, I was getting all ready to scan the few pages when I thought it might be a good idea to read through the entire script first. (Due to all of the info for the DVD, Ultraviolet, fan fictions, screen captures, etc....I've only been able to spot read it so far.) Weeelll.....it looks like I may be wrong in my impression of Mary but then the draft script is very different from the film. There are too many pages for me to scan right now but I'll sum it up.
For those of you who wish to wait until I have the full script on site this is your SCRIPT VARIATION SPOILER WARNING!!! (also Fight Club & Pitch Black spoiler warnings!!)
- - - - - - - - - - - 1. In the scene when Mary and Preston touch fingers he confesses his love for her and she actually cries. (p. 81)
2. Preston actually reaches Mary on time before her incineration. They have some dialog about her willingness to be a martyr for the cause. She does state, "My one regret is that we didn't have more...of everything..." More dialog then she goes to the flame...(p.88-89)
Now this is the important one...
3. When DuPont is revealed to be the acting "Father" on screen with him is Mary. She is still alive...DuPont has her prisoner. It now not only becomes an attempt to kill DuPont/Father but also to rescue Mary. (p. 98-102)
4. The ending scene/shot is very similar to that of Fight Club with the two of them, Mary & Preston watching the explosions in the city together and then they kiss.. . (The End) (p. 103-104)
Personally, I like the film version better but then I loved when Fry got nabbed in Pitch Black. It was sooo unexpected.
Anyway, I'll kick into overdrive the next week and try to finish getting the script on the site. All other submissions will have to be put on hold.

I am so torn as to which version I would have preferred, this or the movie. Hmmm. No, I like the movie better. Thanks again!

Tricky...I think Preston was definitely in love with Mary, even if she didn't quite return the feeling until later (and I think she did, particularly in that scene where she discovers Preston's off the dose and just before she dies, when they look at each other through the glass on the incinerator) *sniffs* I also prefer the scripted version, Jen, from what you say...I wish I'd seen it on the big screen *sighs* although the other was still amazing...

Wow! All of those differences in the script would have completely changed the movie. I guess I can't really say which one I'd like better because I can never see it with the changes. All I know is I'm very happy with the way it was filmed.

I think I prefer what was filmed a whole lot more than the 'hollywood ending' that was scripted. It makes the movie feel a little more real since not everything ended perfectly.
Also, I think I felt a little more angry at those who killed Mary and therefore enjoyed seeing them pay a whole lot more.

When Preston is facing Dupont at the end and Dupont is attempting to dissuade him from killing him with his banter, I love the shot of Mary's face before she is incinerated, and Preston's, "I pay it gladly." You are right. The weight of that scene would have not been there if Mary had not been incinerated. Trinity

Indeed, and besides, it's good to have a movie where the hero does not save the girl once in a while. It's one of the many reasons why EQ is different.

I definitely agree with that, too. Her death made that scene much more powerful than it would have been if she were still alive. Thanks! Yeah, my dream would be the ending with Preston and Mary, side by side, together at the end. But this does go along the lines of the Hollywood formula, so I would have to say that the way the movie was filmed with Mary being incinerated and Preston alone at the end was preferable and more powerful. Just before he shoots DuPont, when they show Mary's face, I knew Preston would shoot him and I was so very happy with this. What's kind of funny is that when I saw EQ the first time, I was convinced she would not be put to death and that Preston would be in time to stop the incineration. I mean, I was certain, having seen this type of thing before in so many movies. And when that did not happen and she burned, I was shocked. And I wanted to cheer, alas poor Mary, but I wanted to cheer because finally, someone had the courage to take a different route and present a movie without the sappy happy ending.

Hey Trinity!
I felt the exact same way when I saw EQ for the first time. I was also sure that Preston was going to save her. Yeah, I'm glad that Wimmer had the courage to forget the "Hollywood formula" and do what was best for the movie.
