It is rather obvious and at least two occasions that both Cleric Brandt and Vice Counsel DuPont are blatant hypocrits. They are both very obviously feeling. Brandt with his smiling, mentioning getting his interval adjusted. Then he rants, after he arrests Preston, about how he has brought down a Cleric who represents the worm that has been eating at the core of their great society. He seems very firey about claiming this honor. The same goes with Dupont and his grinning and then displeasure with Preston when having their interview, for lack of a better word. Then later, he brings Preston before him, and very angrily asks Preston if he is playing with him.
Very intersting points throughout the thread. I especially like the one about Partridge and his ability to still dose and it doesn't effect him because he is in control. Also, the fact that Preston was in love but didn't know he was because the Prozium made him ignorant of the feeling is a deep thought. As far as the whole thing being a placebo/propoganda campaign, that I'm having a hard time wrapping my head around. Aside from the obvious sense offenders seen throughout the film, everyone else is a drone. No personnalities, no individualities, aside from the variations in physical appearance. Seeing as how just about everything is provided by the government anyway, they can control colors, patterns, etc; i.e. EC-10. There are some vaiations in color, but they are all very similar; neutral and plain. Individuality has been replaced with equality, uniqueness with plainness, so to speak.

Brandt smiling is the same as if he were a dopehead doctor, a cop on the take, or a philandering preacher, the badge of hypocrisy plain and simple.

I don't think we should take the "no emotion" thing too literally, or completely.
I think that it is encouraged to be "proud" of the new civilization they have created, and help enforce its rules. They even say in a very emotional way in that open theater "you have won" /you have victory" something like that "you have created a civilization free of war, etc"
So I think pride is an emotion they encourage, but only towards the totalitarian state they have created.
They are trying to get rid of strong emotions in extreme forms, like extreme pain and hatred, sadness etc, and with that also comes eliminating feelings of extasy and love, extreme happiness, etc. If you are on the drug, then extreme feelings will be suppressed.
I'm not sure if taye diggs was low on his dose, which he does refer to in the film, (needing it "adjusted"), or if he can feel pride in his work. I thought he was a great actor. and most of the time showed a coldness and effectiveness in his duties.
I think pride is encouraged, as far as doing a good job in protecting the civilization they have formed and continue to maintain.
and yeah I think it is true that taye diggs and that other lead guy could be sense offenders themselves as we see them in that last room, the ornate one. But they as many in positions of power, consider themselves "above" everyone else, and they see themsleves as "elite". They have no problem with putting others down, and enforcing things onto others in cold ruthless manner. We can see this in society sometimes, politicians and others sometimes hold themselves above everything, like hitler did, and kill innocent people without flinching an eye.
This is an incredible movie. I had a hard time watching it the first time, cause I thought christian bale would get nailed by those guys with guns /swords at many points, and that it would have a sad end. But he did it. He really beat the system, from within, and as they promised, the bombs went off, and the drug factories were probably hit beyond repair, and the system crumbled.
The film lived up to my expectations and surpassed them, which I find it is hard for me to say that, about many films these days.
For some reason I am not sure, I can watch this film over and over again, and it does not get boring. It still has my interest. Something about it is timeless. It's an incredible movie.

Individuality has been replaced with equality, uniqueness with plainness, so to speak. right, everything is made equal to have no jealousy between people. It's an incredible movie, and yeah most everything is in tones of greys. One thing that they could have added to that scene near the end in that opulent room with the sword fight - christian bale, should have entered the room, and then a close up on him, as he looked around the room for a second, seeing the furnishings with confusion like "what the ?" (seeing to himself "holy shit, these guys are major sense offenders" , what a corrupt system) and then had that sword fight with that group of guys.

Exactly what the bankers, police and governments do these days!!!! right , they think they are above the system (which they are in a way), and they have the power to do whatever they want to. "Power corrupts, ultimate power corrupts ultimately." That's one of the ways in which I think this film parallels very well with our own current state of society in the usa and other countries too. The film teaches us a lot, and has a lot to think about. I liked it better than the matrix. It's different, but I liked it even better. Also with drugs/ medications. If cops pull you over and ask you if you are taking medications, they may ask you if you are "off your meds" or not taking your dose. So that's just like the movie, enforcing drugs onto people, and the doctors and big pharma companies make the decisions about what you have to do. You don't make those decisions. So in some ways they hold the power of life and death over you.
