 Working on Production Videos...
« Thread Started on Jan 25, 2005, 12:49pm »

I just sent the following E-mail to Queenie but I thought I would post it here to see if you guys have any ideas...

Hey Queenie,

I've started working on those videos but I've run into some problems. I bought a Video Splitter but it off syncs the sound every time I use it. Also the files are a lot larger than if I just left them as VOB files. I'm really not sure which direction to take right now. I'm tempted to just leave them as VOB files. The quality is also better for the size this way.

What do you think??

Jen

OK, I think I somewhat have this worked out...maybe. I'm uploading one file right now to Freewebs as a tester. It is about 5 minutes long & 111MB. It is an original VOB file. That means that any computer DVD player & MS media player should be able to access it. The problem I think is going to be the fact that Freewebs throttles downloads & will most likely kill my bandwidth.

I'm currently looking into other hosting options. If you guys know of any that might work let me know here. I don't mind paying for it either because bandwidth at Freewebs will cost me dearly!!

I can host files but I have limited bandwidth as well, a 100meg file will take 3 hours or so on my FTP. Jen, what exactly are you trying to do to the files that is making them bigger than VOB's? Your best bet here is to convert the files to avi or mpeg formats. Now whenever you do that with cheap or free software you have the audio sync problem but Canopos makes a program called procoder that works great. Can you burn the files to a DVD and send them to me snail mail? I can re-encode the files for you, or I can hook you up with the software to do it yourself.. PM me and let me know how I can help...

Not 100% sure. I was using Ultra Video splitter. My 111MB file in VOB and reduced from 640X280 to 400X300 ended up being larger (AVI=200+MB, MPEG=150MB) with a vastly inferior quality. Not to mention the sound being off sync. Maybe I just bought a bad program but I really cannot afford buying another one right now.

Maybe when I get that first file up (loading now) one of you guys might want to play around with it.

Actually I found two free ones that were awesome & just split it but didn't convert it.

Let's first wait and see how Streamloader works. If it does a good job I might just move a bunch of the other download files from the site there as well. It could save me A LOT in Freewebs bandwidth cost if this actually works.

I have to mention that the video quality already is really not the best. These were made with some type of handheld mostly for blocking, practice, & such. There are a few sequences where these lead up to the actually filming of a scene but most of it is really just a video rough draft of some of the stuff that ended up being on screen.

In my hum. op. only a true fan & fans of films in general would really be interested in these. There's not much flashy about most of them & Christian Bale is only in a few since it's mostly mock-up. Personally I'm quite thrilled & taken by them but then I actually at one time wanted to work on films.

Ok, it looks like the first file is all ready. I'm still not 100% sure how all of this works or if this will be how I actually will end up doing this. I'm just testing it for now. If you would like to see a 5 minute clip of the blocking of one of the Nether's sequences please feel free to download it from the link below. Once downloaded you should be able to open it using a DVD program or Windows Media Player (I think.)

Please, please leave any feedback...love it...hate it...I don't care. I just need to know if all of this work has really resulted in anything that will be beneficial to the fans.

;D Yep that worked.

Took me a little while to download and managed to view it with no problems via windows media.

Great stuff, actually really enjoyed it. Some may find it a bit boring as it's mainly KW behind a wobbly camera and two guys going through the motions of the fight scene in the Nethers (the one where Preston uses the guns as hammers and breaks a Sweepers arm, leg etc, you know the one).

It actually helped me a little with a fight scene that I'm currently trying to write for my fan fic.

Thanks Jen. ;) Hope that feedback helped. ;) Keep them coming. :)

Sure did!! How long was your download time??

Also to anyone else if you want to try & convert this into something smaller be my guest because I have had no luck with that. At this point I'm not sure if I want to permanently go with the original version of the file or something smaller. What do you guys think?? Is it worth the wait to have a bigger file or not??

I downloaded it. Took about 25min averaging 80-100K per sec. You mentioned the piece was 5 minutes but the one I got was only about a minute. It was cool though, watching them block out the fight scenes. Would definitely like to see more...

Jenge, what you may want to do is transcode the vob (mpeg-2) files into mpeg-4 (divx, xvid or similar variant) as they, with proper settings, effectively be indistinguishable from the vob's.

I can only guess at what the 'video splitter' thing is doing that you used, but it seems like it is decompressing the mpeg-2 compressed video (vob) into a less compressed (or totally decompressed) format, which would explain why the resultant file is larger. It may also explain why the audio plays back out of sync with the video, because it is unlikely that your computer can move that much data (uncompressed video and/or audio) in a timely fashion.

doom9.org is the place to go if you're looking to learn the fine art of transcoding video, but if I were you i'd just use something like panasonic mpeg encoder, which is just fire and forget, although the resultant quality won't be up to par as compared with a PROPERLY trancoded mpeg-4 result, it would be more than enough for this purpose, imho. Also i dont doubt that you can find freeware software to do the job at doom9.org

Thanks but so far I've already looked through most of the freeware at doom9.org with no results. Besides I'd rather keep it as close to the original as possible. If someone else wants to change it, that's fine by me.

Never mind...I just tried a second time & it seems to be working fine. Also I'll try to create a much smaller file some time today for those of you will slower connections. It probably will not be perfect but at least you'll get the idea.

Ok, I know that some of you guys were hoping for a smaller AVI or MPEG file but for those with dial-up it still would be way too large. The smallest I could get it to was 68M, poor quality, & off sync. So instead I've made a WMV file (20M) for now so that most people who would like to take a look at it can. As I said before the sound is slightly off and the quality not the best. I should have it finished uploading within the hour. (Why the hell is uploading only 6-10 K a second!! ::))

I'll be back soon with the link...

Ok, I've finished the smaller WMV file...(I had to try it twice to get the whole file. For some reason the downdloading might slip to the end before it should. :-/ It should be almost 5 minutes - some of my timers say 6 minutes though.)

I've been watching my stats for these downloads & things seem to be going fine. It appears that the problem of the download slipping offline too soon is still happening. If you don't get the complete download just try again. It's there, it just might take a few tries to get it. Sorry about that!!

Jen,

I was unable to download the larger production video file at home or work, but the smaller one was no problem. It turns out to be 6:09 BTW and downloaded in about a minute. Quality was great--sound fine, too.

I loved being able to see the background work for the fight scene! We are so fortunate to have access to these production videos and all the other inside stuff you have on the site. I noted that the scene in the movie followed the background video to a "T".

At first, however, I thought that they had decided against the 3 turnaround spins before each hit made by Preston on the last sweeper. BUT, after watching the movie again (for the umpteenth time) I looked carefully at this and noted that Preston did indeed turn around before each hit. Never noticed that before. So, the production video helped to enrich my view of this particular fight scene.

Thanks for all your hard work in putting this together, and may we hope for more?

Well, I've used different programs & some say that it's 5 minutes & others that it's 6 (just checked Power DVD & it says 2:25 ::)) . Not 100% what they are using to figure it. Barbararosahof just posted that it ran 6:09 for her. Maybe your program (& mine) are just calculating it wrong. It should end with the camera angle near the ground, pointing upwards at Vickers & the other guy (knees) cutting off where Wimmer says "OK."

Yes, I have about six hours of this stuff. ;D I'll probably do a new one twice a month or so. That should keep me busy for a few years. ;)

I'm thrilled that you liked it especially since I really do not have a clue what I'm doing. I must be doing something right...
