Interview with Storyboard Artist Steve Werblun
« Thread Started on Jun 25, 2004, 10:08am »

I've been completely jazzed about this one since Steve first offered to do an interview for the site on the day I left for Germany. In fact, I have to confess that I even worked on in it during vacation & it was pure pleasure to do so. Now busting with pride & excitement I can finally share it with you guys on the board first before I even get it on the front page. If you have any comments for Steve just leave them on this thread because I'll be forwarding the link to him...ENJOY!!

"I did have some creative input as far as the shots go. The most noteworthy sequence being when Preston surfs the door into the blackened room in the "Opening Raid Sequence". Kurt directed me all of the way up to the door and as Preston crashes through it. Then, he asked me...while it was pitch black in the room, to design 12 different positions from which Preston would fire both of his guns at the rebels, laying in wait for him around the perimeter of the room. All of these shots were to be viewed as if in a strobe light effect...and he shot it exactly that way. I am very pleased to say that Kurt used most of my poses in this sequence...and it remains my favorite of all the storyboard sequences I've ever done. "

Fantastic, fantastic interview, Jen. What strikes me again is that how amazing the making of EQ actually is...the fact that Steve Werblum felt special because of his relationship with Kurt and the way that his visuals were reproduced so authentically...

Wonderful stuff! ;D

I'm still absolutely stunned by what Steve said about not having received screen credit until EQ. I mean the storyboards & conceptuals are a major aspect of filmmaking that lives on long after a film is released just like the costumes, some of the props scripts... I really find it odd & unfortunate that they get over looked like they do. IMDb does not even list some of the work that they do. Steve certainly does not have all of his credits there...I think that I'll need to go fix that myself!!

I also want to mention how awesome it is that Steve is willing to get more of the storyboards to me. I can't wait to get my hands on them. So this project actually will be a work in progress. Look for them sometime in the future.

Ok, I met with Steve yesterday & he's really a great guy. He gave me a bunch of storyboards to put on the site, the first of which I should have done sometime by the end of this week or early next week. He really loves the "darkroom" sequence as he mentioned in the interview so I'll be covering that first. Hopefully with comparison shots from the film.

Now for the surprise...He gave me a more current version of Equilibrium's script to place on the site. 8-) The one there now is an earlier version and this one is a lot closer to the "shooting" script (I think). Well, needless to say once I have it done there should be two version of the script on site to compare. (Wooohooo!!)

Anyway, thanks to Steve with all my heart for giving me this stuff to add to the site. I'll be busy scanning for months!! ***HUGS!!!***

For updates on his stuff just check back here or click on "Notify" for this thread. I'll post all his additions as I finish with them on this thread.

I had hoped to be finished with 4 of Steve's pages that he gave me of the "strobe shootout" but that just is not going to be completed until tomorrow so in the mean time here's one frame...

I'm working on creating a comparison page between some of the shots in the film with the storyboards. It's taking me a bit longer then I thought it would...

I'm in a bit of a rush this morning (leaving here in a minute to see The Village) so I may not have time to post this on the front page until later today. Anyway, I'm giving the message board groupies an advanced look...

Steve's new pages start here...
http://www.freewebs.com/equilibrium-movie/storyboard17.htm

...but what took me so long & what I'm really proud of is the "Storyboard to Film Comparison" pages that I worked up...
http://www.freewebs.com/equilibrium-movie/DarkroomContrast.htm

Also note that Steve's original page has been redesigned to give me room to add all of the rest of the Storyboard that he has shared with us. Look for them in the near future.

Enjoy & leave any message for Steve here...he is watching...(oh, how I enjoy teasing him!!! ;D)
