 ...looking for the painting...
« Thread Started on Mar 20, 2004, 1:08pm »

Last fall, I saw a framed print of a painting called "The First Lesson" in an antique store and fell in love with it. Problem is, they want $400 for it.
Last night I watched Equilibrium for the first time (awesome movie!!) and it blew me away when right in the beginning of the movie, there was the painting!!
I've searched for it on the web for hours and hours with no success.
Does ANYONE know who the painter is, or where I could order a print?

Hi Bella...I was hoping that someone might already have this answer for you but I guess not. Can you discribe which picture exactly that you are looking for since the title does not seem to helping??

Maybe we can get someone to grab some screen caps of it then to help in the search.

Hmmm? That's the only one I can think of...

Apart from, of course, the Mona Lisa.

No, there are several on the back wall in that raid sequence as well. I think I remember seeing a Nude. Was it Aphrodite??

Oh.
The "right in the beginning" made me think it was that one.

Could be...that's why I was asking. Don't want to waste time searching for the wrong painting.

BTW, thanks for pulling up the images.

That's the one Max. The girl with a book on her lap. I'm not usually a fan of portraits, but the look on this girls face is what caught my attention. Sort of ..wistful...hard to describe. I still can't find it :( I think it was painted in 1856.

Hi Libby ...well, that's what it said on the picture.
I have been looking through English artists, but maybe it's American.
And a belated thanks Max, at least I can look at it here for now ;)

Hmmm. I've looked through various sites and come up with zilch. I agree, it's a really lovely painting - such expressive features. It reminded me of Millais, but I was looking through the European stuff - given they filmed in Germany. Maybe it is American. I'll keep looking. Oh, btw, you should register and join the mayhem! ;D

I found it!!!
http://www.allposters.com/gallery.asp?aid=1588850003&startat=%2Fstartpage%2Easp

The store had the picture mislabelled, they said Unknown artist..and the tile is wrong too.
No wonder I had such a hard time finding it.
Thanks for looking though!

Ah... I remember that KW made a reference to Bouguereau in his Commentary in 'Man's Inhumanity....'

Do you think he had something against the artist? ;)

This web page explains a bit of it...I was wondering why I had never heard of Bouguereau before...now that I've seen a lot of his work, I'm just speechless.
