The Origin and Meaning of the word Libria...
« Thread Started on Jun 2, 2005, 12:10pm »

The following was posted in the guestbook. Since I do not have time to tackle it right now I thought that some of you knowledgeable people here might. If not I'll get back to it later...

Hi~! I'm a senior student of Chung Buk National University in South Korea. I'm writing my paper about 'Equilibrium'. Title of my paper is "Comparison of Two Distopia -Zamyatin's 'We' and Kurt Wimmer's 'Equilibrium'-". I have a question about this movie. What is the origin of 'LIBRIA'? From Latin? or English?? I think that 'Libria' is originated from 'Liberty' or 'Liberta(Latin)' My inference is right?

Could be, although I think Libria came from the name of the drug Librium; wasn't that what Kurt originally planned instead of Prozium?

Yes, it was so I'm not 100% sure on his intention. Libria does have other meanings though.

Something to do with liberty, perhaps?

I think that the term of "Libria" was used for satire. A totalitarian state controls human's liberty. So, I think, director used that term to express totalitarian state's imperfection.

Yes..I can see the link between Libria and liberty (from Latin... Liber: free and Libertas: freedom)

Father wants everyone to believe that they are finally free (liberated)of the chaos of emotions which led to virtual annihilation.

But I have the feeling that it's more affiliated to Libra as in scales and balance

KW already wanted call the film 'Equilibrium' with its connotations of 'balance' and 'stability' via a controlled drug. He intended to call the drug 'Librium' until he found out it existed, but Prozium II works perfectly IMO.

I dont think librium means really anything, as from word liber (free), the form would be liberum and from libri (book) it would be librarium, and of libra (scale) it *would* be librium, but that form isnt in use on its own (to my knowledge). I suspect that the ones who made the drug, as well as the writer, misunderstood the word to be related to freedom, as it sounds pretty much the same.

This isn't about semantics. The original question from our guest concerned the origins of Libria, the city, not Librium, the drug, therefore both his and my opinions remain valid. I doubt if KW misunderstood anything...I think he knew exactly what he meant to imply.

Interestingly, here they mention the real indications of the existing drug Librium (tm), Chlordiazepoxide.

I think the name Libria can be translated into 'land of the free' or something. Father wanted to free people from emotions, and it would be logic to give the city a name which expresses it.

I think that this is also supported by the fact that Libria has a "Freedom Reading". Personally, I get the feeling that Wimmer was interpreting an idea of "new speak" from 1984 where words are used and misused for propaganda. Obviously Libria had very little freedom or liberties but used the words anyway to imply that they did. This is a common practice by totalitarian regimes.

I always took the name for balance, as in balanced behaviour due to the lack of emotion... at last, we are at peace with ourselves kinda thing.

I guess unless somebody asks KW we'll never know, since both interpretations are possible IMHO.
